While working in Ocotillo Wells I drove on Wolf Well Road (the one that goes to Holmes Camp) and noticed a new sign. On the trail that runs next to the highway there was a new sign on each side of the road. "This trail is for off-road vehicles only with a RED or GREEN sticker only!" and the "red" and "green" were both printed there colors. I've never seen this anywhere before. I'm working on the park rangers future home sites, but didnt see any of them after I saw the sign, so I didnt ask if this was the only place? or are they all over now? I have a bike and a few quads, but like a lot of my friends, I also have a toy with license plates. Also my son drives his ford ranger around out there.

Does anyone know about this or have seen them before? This is the only part of the trail that I saw these signs. I looked they the airport/splitmountain rd and did not see another one. Thanks.

Sorry no picture.

I haven't seen the signs but I'm sure you're fine with a plate.

I like the fact that there are MANY new signs out there that I saw on our last trip. They mostly explain the rules that are common sense to most but I like them nonetheless. I saw that the 78 seems lined with with the signs telling people to stay off the shoulder on their dirtbikes....no more pleading ignorance on that one.

I asked the parks guy doing the quad trainning next to my jobsite and he said that it is the trail that runs along the highway but not next to it. They put the signs in to get the off road traffic to ride on it instead of next to the road, where the signs your talking about are. He said they grade that trail to try to incurrage the traffic onto that one. I was just worried because I did get a ticket out there in my baja bug over new years weekend. (went to court today while I was back home). He did say not to worry if you had plates on that trail, they werent doing it to be able to write more tickets.
big had
designated ohv trails-keep the off road toys off the main roads-keep the trucks off the OHV trails...you'll see a lot more of this coming in the future..its all good though....makes sense in a way...but I am sure somewhere down the line it will turn into more tickets..it is all in the name of "safety"....

Had my desert tracks on the back and sand tires in the front. Went on Split Mountain rd right by the bar to go around a few people and a sherriff lit me up. On Thanksgiving weekend, I had another officer flag me over and ask me to drive on the road to keep the dust down.

The officers that pulled me over tried to hassel me, saying they were trying to decide if they were going to pull my plates and make me re register my baja bug with a green sticker. To shorten the story up. By the end of it, they had to admit they couldnt do that, and that I did not need fenders to be street legal.

I did get a ticket for...

1........ front tires bald (sand tires)
2........ non dot tires in rear
3........ no current proof of insurance (had a copy of reg and insurance for the last 8 years in the car and they ran the DMV saying it was insured)
4........ off road lights uncovered (8 hid lights, and had the covers with me)

End result: All count signed off by another officer, (even the ones he marked "no")and because the one that pulled me over messed up the ticket, I had to go see the judge. Through out the rear tire count, and desmissed the other 3 counts for a total of $25 paper work fee. Total $75.

Be carefull there too. I got a text from my bestfriends last year while they were over there. They were in a wash and pulled onto a dirt road that leads to the property/house they take there toyhauler to and got a ticket. They had posted a sign saying that it was a county maintained road so they got a ticket in there buggy for driving on the road. EVERYONE drives on that dirt road and has for years.
