If I fill up on the road it can take me 20 min to do if nobody is allready filling up. I can do it at home while I load my trailer. The wieght of water is about equal to a couple of quads in my trailer and I don't think it's makes sitting somplace for 20 min as I fill up.

I would like to know what code violation they are citing for? My understanding is that the weight laws apply to commercial vehicles not private coaches. Now out of a safety concern, I could understand them checking the GCVWR of the rig and the weight rating on the tires to see if you are overloaded but could they cite you for it? Or can they just make you park it until you can get the weight in line with the ratings. I would love to here the opinion of one of our law enforcement board members.

unless you are Over the weight rating of your tires there is no specific law im aware of in CA that they can cite for being "overweight"...now you can be cited for "unsafe load" if the officer wants to push his agenda which is purely a judgement call......they also can check to see if you have the endorsement on your license depending on the weight of your trailer and they CAN cite you for towing out of class.....

35550. (a) The gross weight imposed upon the highway by the wheels
on any one axle of a vehicle shall not exceed 20,000 pounds and the
gross weight upon any one wheel, or wheels, supporting one end of an
axle, and resting upon the roadway, shall not exceed 10,500 pounds.
(b) The gross weight limit provided for weight bearing upon any
one wheel, or wheels, supporting one end of an axle shall not apply
to vehicles the loads of which consist of livestock.
© The maximum wheel load is the lesser of the following:
(1) The load limit established by the tire manufacturer, as molded
on at least one sidewall of the tire.
(2) A load of 620 pounds per lateral inch of tire width, as
determined by the manufacturer's rated tire width as molded on at
least one sidewall of the tire for all axles except the steering
axle, in which case paragraph (1) applies.
If you are stopped by the CHP commercial units and weighed I think you would be more likely to be cited for being out of class or not having a travel trailer endorsement.

OK UPDATE now that im at a computer. Heres what happened. My buddies are going out this morning to try to land a pad. They only have quads and flat bed trailers so they were not stopped. It was a check point. Just like the sobriety ones. They saw portable scales and called me to give me a heads up.I just relayed the message. I know for a fact that with my 42ft ww ,buggy, rhino , fuel ,water gear etc Im at 29k which is not in the class c driving range. Ive gotten ticket before and it was $850 about 5 years ago. At 2:30 another buddy passes through and the check point is gone.
Now another story three weeks ago at the border check on the back road they have dogs sniffing for dope. I call my other herbal friendy 420 type friends and advise. They dump all the pot they had. They get to the check point and no dogs. THEY CALL BS and are all mad. I just said hey . better safe than sorry. It wasnt a joke it was just looking out.

That is the way I always go, and they usually have a dog there, not always sniffing, but still there. I got pulled over for 45 mins one time because the dog indicated there could be drugs. After 45 mins the said sorry and thank you for your cooperation, have a nice day ....

It never ceases to amaze me how many "truckers" we have on this site and yet so few of them actually know the laws that pertain to them...
People get so upset and start name calling about how the LEO's are making stuff up, yet it almost always seems to be a viable law.
They dont just make stuff up.
