I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE IN VW TRANSMISSIONS. I HAVE A SWINGAXLE CAR WITH A 2275 JUST REBUILT FROM BROTHERS MACHINE SHOP.
I HEARD TERMS LIKE -"5 RIBS" WHICH ARE ON TOP OF THE CASE AND 091, 002. WHATS THIS STUFF MEAN? I CANT AFFORD A IRS SETUP BUT I KNOW AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THE TRANS I HAVE IN THE CAR NOW IS THE BOTTOM OF THE LINE VW AND WEAK. IT HAS CLOSE RATIO GEARS FOR THE SAND .
I CANT AFFORD A MENDEOLA OF WRIGHT GB TRANS. I HAVE HEARD OF A SHOP WHO SELLS TRANS BEEFED UP THAT WILL HOLD UP THE MY NEWELY AQUIRED H.P.(STILL NOT ALOT). THEY COST ABOUT 700-900 BUCKS.
ARE ANY OF THE 091'S SWINGAXLE OR 002. "BUSS TRANS"?
YOUR KNOWLEDGE IS APPRECIATED THANKS- RYAN

002 and 091 are both bus trannys, the 091(or 6 rib) is the stongest of the bus trannys. They seem to be the way to go unless
you are running mid-engine, then the type 1 swing axle is the norm.

glad to help, Swing axles can be built up to hold up to big vw power, there are also places that can convert the swing axle to irs so you can get more travel.

VW Type 1 - Swing Axle
VW Type 1 - IRS
VW 002 - 3 & 5-rib bus trans
VW 091 - 6-rib bus trans
HP varies, I have a mid-engine v8 car with a VW type 1 - Swing Axle
