ABC here.. just got back from my President's Day Trip (in BIG BEAR, wife pulled the card on my Glamis trip.. ha ha ha)!.. buddy of mine, still in Glamis got seperated duning and his fuel pump failed in his Black Rhino last night. Friends tell me he thinks he may have even been out of bounds after getting seperated.

Anyhow, he walked from about 1am to 7am when he finally arrived back at camp. I told them to contact the Ranger Station.

At least he made it. The dunes are no place to get lost alone, let alone at night. Hope he finds his Rhino but at least he found his way back to camp alive. This story could have ended a lot worse.

True dat.. I always pack a bunch of water. I haven't spoken to my pal. Another friend detailed his plight as he was still sleeping.

Hope someone finds his ride. It can be replaced worse case, he can't.

Never travel without a race radio, cell phone, cooler of sodas and GPS.

If it was in out of bounds area, may want to check with the rangers station.

Garmin Zumo 550 mount it, hike with it, take it from car to car and user friendly. Cant do that with a Lowrance

Kinda sounds like he wasnt out alone until his "friends" kept going. Unless he took of in his own direction. Did anyone bother to go look for the missing guy in the 6 hours he was walking? Or just figure he wanted some alone time?

Sorry, don't have many details. Board member and freind, JEEP DUNER, was the one relaying the message to me. He told me last night that now they think he walked from somewhere near China Wall, back to camp, pad 2.5. He and another jeep were on the hunt this a.m. for the Rhino.

Don't know how/why he got seperated or how/why the rest of the group missed that he was missing.

We saw a black rhino in the dunes yesterday- near Osborne lookout- no one was around it... Wonder if it was his? We were about halfway between osbourne and olds... Wish I woulda seen this sooner, coulda helped out somehow - goin on a ride right now, I'll keep a lookout...

i was on the ride. he disappeared just minutes before getting to olds. we waited at the bottom of olds for him to show up assuming hes just playing up top. after 15min or so we went looking for him. i had my gps on and retraced my exact route with no luck. we wnt back out to camp to see if he was there. no luck again. we restocked supplies like tow rope, fuel filter etc just in case and went back out looking for him til 4 or 5 am. he had a phone on him and it died while he was trying to relay gps coordinates to me. just alot of circumstances that made it hard to find him, if his phone didnt die it would have been really easy. and for the record we didnt leave him out there, we were up all night looking and just couldnt find him!

You just lost angrybuttcracks excuse to not have to go to big bear instead of glamis! Dont tell his wife.

Did he find the rhino yet?

JEEP DUNER and the boyz found where it was.. by Osbourne, but the Rhino was gone. They're gonna check the ranger station (update from about 1pm).

Just VM him.

Hope they found it. UTVMahem (Blake) has saved me many times in the dunes at night.. we've had fun diggin/pulling my jeep with his Rhino (can be done if the Rhino is down hill from a stuck jeep to pop it out of being stuck).

I bet it was the one that we saw...Sunday morning, around 10 or 11...I wish I had seen this thread sooner..I coulda helped him get his rhino back...hopefully the rangers have it

I cant imagine there are many abandoned Rhinos out there, but I must say that there is a HUGE area difference between the dunes by Osborne and the China Wall....Even in my most 'disorganized' state I think I could differentiate between the two.

I blew a coolant line one night out in the dunes, figured it out when it started to over heat. I thought no problem I have my hand held gps and cell phone. After hiking up to the top of a dune to get service I realized my batt was low. I ended up getting about half of the coordinates out when it died. Not about to sleep alone in the dunes (thanksgiving it was really cold) I drove out. The motor blew just as I made it to the washes.

After that I added a $15 cell phone charger to my tool kit

thats what I was thinking also. We had a friend get lost from us one night. By the time we were able to get ahold of him on the cell phone he was to disoriented to tell us were he was. He said he could see the 78 in the far distance. We told him to head that way vs risking cutting across the dunes to pat 2.5. best of luck finding the rhino...

most likely wasnt just a filter. this car has a fuel cell and has had pump issues in the past.

Especially easy when your buddies are searching for you in the dark.
One question though, Are you, by "you" I mean the lost/broken down rhino driver, the only guy in So. Cal. that doesn't have a cell phone?

Still haven't seen any postings for a black Rhino on Craigslist yet. Any update on what happened ??

I remember seeing a lone black rhino out in the dunes at the bottom of a bowl during presidents weekend. It was all by itself with the hood popped up. Looked in good condition with everything there.

No clue where in the dunes though, good luck!

It got towed out and was at a tow company. Someone gripped the HIDs, but at lest they got it bck, $300 tow I think.
