Full Version: How Do I Add A Alternator To My Rc51 Rhino?

I have called around about having my Stator rewound. I talked to Ricky stator and they turned me onto Custom Remind I called and they said they could rewind my stator but because the use a special magnet in that stator I could MAYBE get 15 to 20% more power out of it.

What are my options?? Does anyone make a chain driven Alternator? Or can I run a belt off the sprocket shaft??

Ideas???

if you have the money you can do it, you have to make a threaded piece that will extend off the crankshaft, so your stator is held onto the crankshaft via a nut from factory, you have to make a 4 inch extensition that will go through your cover, you have to machine the cover to hold a oil seal. after that you can put a pulley on and make a bracket that runs off your chain cover and your rhino frame to hold a alternator, you will also need a belt tensioner. The problem with removing the stator all together is the stator if I remember right also holds the crank speed sensor.
I would rewind the stocker and then run two batteries and see if that works for what you need.

a Alternator is going to be a bitch to do, not impossible but not easy either.

Bill I have the RPM rearend and I have a 1in keyway shaft on the other side of the input side. I need to put a pully on that and mount an alternator bad like. When I head back from the drags at night my battery drops down to 9 volts with only 2 35w hids. Every time I stop I have to let it idle to get the volts back up so it will restart.

the rc51 must not make to many watts. my 05 r1 in the rhino never drops below 13.5 with 5 8"hids and the 16' spal fan running. I you get this figured out I would love to run a ps pump.

chain driven alternator, what a great idea. Why not? mount a sprocket on the alternator and mount it like a chain tensioner? Is there room anywhere?

thinking about it, it would be easier for the driver part of it, because you could in theory drive it off the front drive sprocket, basically make a billet extension mount ANOTHER sprocket and run the alternator right above, it wouldnt take much to convert it since you could pull the pulley off the alternator and machine a sprocket to mate onto (clear the key whole). I would then find out the calculations on the RPM the alternator needs to pull and make it happen through the gearing....

it sounds much easier, but my fear is when the chain lets go it may not happen but it is a Wat IF moment, it would actually be easier to do the tensioner as well because you could make it a manual tension with a built pressing agains the alternator

PS. you guys made me run out into the garage, here is my idea.

use a VW alternator, they provide plenty of wats and can charge battery's in a instant. the plus side of this is the fact that the vw alternators are designed to have a pully on them, which is removable, you can in theory place your drive sprocket on the keyway already provided, then you do the "mini extension" and make the alternator adjustable so that you can push the whole alternator vertically, I would use bolts with nuts. That may just work

my only fear is when the chain breaks its going to do a hell of a job with everything around it

Call alba.

It's just an engine shop now, but I recall the previous owner of the company talking to me about a alternator kit.

Anyone ever heard of doubling up and running two stators? My buddy told me at dinner last night he road a Quad that was built to race the Baja 1000 and it had an extended side cover and two stators running on it to handle all the lights.

I am not sure how you would do this but it sounds interesting. I like the idea of making power all the time not just when the car is in gear.

The search continues.

You'd have to make sure you are in the correct rpm range for the alternator as well, so being driven off the chain may be an issue. ??? Probably not gonna charge very well at low rear wheel speeds...

How about a mini wind generator on the roof? smile.gif

I'd consider that for my quad. LOL.

Dragonfire ran a diff mounted alternator on their race car recently. Seems the same type of setup could easily be used for a chain driven rear end setup. Ill see if I can find pictures. The alt was mounted above and slightly behind the rear diff.

last weekend in my R1 powered RZR i ran 4 Hella converted to 50watt hid, 1 6" led on the bumper, led taillights, fiberoptic whip, lightbar actuator, Dakota Digital gauges, stock R1 speedo all at night with no issues. my voltgauge read 12.4 volts with everything on. just enough in my book.

i was concerned about running all of that stuff and was looking into running an alternator since i run one in my rhino and its great to have all of that power.

UTV Crap makes an alternator kit fo rthe 700 rhino that uses a shaft and an oil seal that comes of the end of the crank. i tried this part on my R1 and it was not the same threads but can be easily made in a lathe to fit anything.

i heard a story this weekend that the mighty mouse buggy has a alternator mounted off his axle/cv ?

Tom Pro makes an alternator setup that runs off the the crank shaft I believe.

ever get the alternator installed.

what size pullys did you use?

i finnally got around to having a crank adapter made for my r1. it should be done in a couple of weeks.
