The Costco Kirkland brand of dog food was recommended to me over Iams, eukanuba, and most over the counter dog foods. Then (sp)unnova..nutro and wellness were also recommended. The dog I am getting is currently on Iams and I am thinking of going with the costco brand as its tons cheaper. The reviews show its actually better than most store brands ingredient wise.
Any feed back on any of these brands I mentioned?
Thank you

Brody gets Innova. I get compliments on his coat and health constantly. It is expensive though. 34lb bag is $57. You do feed less on high quality foods though. Brody is 105 lbs and only eats 1 cup dry mixed with 1/3 can Innova Flex wet food twice daily.
Canidae is a very good food as well, but gives Brody the Tijuana 2 step. The Kirkland is a very good food as well. It is made by Diamond. Has good stats, but I was leery to feed it because of the Diamond pet food scare a few years ago.

I feed mine California Natural and he does really well on it. I used to use Canidea, but when they changed their formula a year or so ago, it gave my dog the runs. But if your looking for cheaper dog food, then the Kirkland would be your best bet. California Natural runs about $40 for a 35lb bag.

We have been using Kirkland Chicken and Rice Mature formula for our Dane. We started using Kirkland when she was a pup because we had to have a low protein food to help slow her growth. Then we just stuck with the brand. We use the chicken and rice over the lamb and rice for flatulence reasons...

I have used Pro Plan Lamb and rice and mine are healthy as can be w/soft shiney coats! I have heard great things about the costco brand, just never tried it. I "free feed" mine 2 pups and they are not overweight at all. Of course they get sppliments of things like steak fat, chicken meat and treats.

Thank y'all

I think I ought to buy him the Iams just to mix into the Kirkland to transition him. If he does well and doesn't clear the room with stink bombs I'll keep it.

Thanks for the site Dan

I'm with Charred - we went with the Royal Canine too - not an ounce of fat on our two boxers and boxers have a tendancy to get fat!
Love the royal canine!

I worked in several different pet shops right after high school (a longgg time ago). I always questioned the "designer" dog foods and if they are really better than the lower priced foods. I got my German Shorthair pointer from a breeder in Maryland that has been breeding these dogs for 60 years (he was an old fart!). He swears by Ol' Roy and keeps his dogs super lean. He had the father of the dog that I bought and he was 16 years old and still healthy. He said his dogs always live long by keeping them lean...........FWIW

http://www.bluebuff.com/is what my kids get. Mine is a beagle boston mix and they are known to be pigs and get fat however she is perfectly trim right along with the yellow lab and lil whippit mix we just got.
30lb bag is about 47 bucks at petsmart and its the only other food that doesnt upset the boggles tummy. She was on a Prescription science diet for ages and we got tired of spending 60+ for a 17lb bag so we did some research and gave this a shot and it doesnt bother her at all. Been great stuff so far. All 3 of them have soft shiney coats due to the fish oil's in the food and she wont do the tijauana 2 step either :P

My Akita has been on Canidae since she was a pup, highly recommended by the breeder we bought her from. Check ingredients for meat product content, stay away from fillers like rice or corn. You can tell good dog foods over others by the size of the waste, better food is absorbed more and produce less waste.
Cacti'
Feb 18 2010, 02:58 PM
Lots of good info, thanks...I definatley want food that will keep him lean. Excess waste is something I'd like to avoid. I'd rather feed him a higher quality food that his system will absorb more of the nutrients therefore producing less waste and providing better nutrition. Sounds good to me. He is a 65 pound Pit Bull.
hmmmm decisions...

We use Nutro Max for ours but whatever you get make sure the first ingredient is a meat and not a corn based product like cornmeal or something, if it is your dog is just pooping it out and not doing him any good.
Corn is just a temp. filler, it will make him feel full for awhile and end up eating more in the long run. They will also eat more thus crap more.
Give them the good stuff and you wont have that problem

Ain't that the truth! One of ours laid some stinkers nonstop when we would feed him the lamb and rice.

I give my dog Halo...its a hollistic dog food. Its expensive, but she doesnt eat very much (less waste), and her coat is beautiful...im always getting compliments on how shiney it is. It gets hot here in the summer, and it helps her skin from getting too dry as well.

Okaaay soooo, A friend of mine gave me TONS of samples of Honest Kitchen and Taste of the Wild. I have a feeling there are expensive BUT he is eating it right up and little waste.

So my chore today is off to find it and how much...Its pretty cool, the honest kitchen is a dehydrated food that you mix in with their kibble add water and mix it like oatmeal.
I just love this dog
