facts here...ive owned mine for over a year....
its a great trail bike...in the woods and the deserts....the bike is a dream. ive riddn over 100+ miles in one day out at dove springs...and never even got close to being tired. but keep this in mind...im runnin TCS shocks and a Scotts stablizer...that makes a big diff in the ride!!!
in the dunes its way lacking...i have 13/41 gears...drz-e base gasket...hotcams intake...k&n...rejeted...and a white bros R4 pipe. ill run with most anyone on the flat ground...but on a hill shoot i wont even try. the bike did 28mph up comp hill at dumont stock...and now im up to 37. a bone stock trx450 runs 34 up the same hill. piped raptor...bout 38....piped yfz...bout 41...so even with my mods...im still last up the hill
if u want a great trail bike...the Z is the best...but in the sand...ummmmm...id pick sumpthin else!

I have to disagree wiht you, i have stock gearing and the alba stage 3 kit with burgard +2 a-arms and the big is a dream in the dunes, mine dunes great, how fast do you go through the woops when going up hill? if i wanted to i could shift into 3rd going up comp at buttercup,

im wide open thru any whoops out at glamis...in the desert...i get tired after bout 20 or so of them deep ass whoops!!! on an MX track..i can float over most whoops.

Sorry shovel spank... I was going off of this thread:
http://www.glamisdunes.com/invision/index....opic=19811&st=0when you said you're gonna be the proud owner. Why would you consider the Z over the Yami??

I love my Z. It's my first quad and has had one hell of a rough 1st season in the dunes. It never let's me down. Do I want more power? Of course. Heck, show me a guy who says he has enough power in any of his toys and I'll show you somebody who doesn't use his toys enough.
The way I look at it, it's all about having fun. There will always be someone out there who has more $$$ to spend on toys than you do. Don't worry about the fastest toy out there. There will ALWAYS be faster ones out there. Not to mention newer, bigger, better ones rolling out of the factory each year. Find a happy median point between the $ you have to work with and the performance you want out of the bike.
I think it's good that your shopping and considering your options. That's the only way that you'll find the right bike for you.

i love my kfx in the dunes!i think dunes great, i can keep up. it just kinda lacks the hill shooting power. suspention (a arms & shocks) makes a big diff when you hit the whoops at the bottom of olds, and with pipe, jet,knn & gearing, its respectable.

I'm right here.

My bike has way more power than my riding abilities. I can still tear up the dunes and smoke 95% of the other bikes I've raced. I got beat by a 15k banshee though.

Yes I ride the hell out of it. Yes, it's alot of power. Too much for me but I'm always craving more.

Take CRASH for example. That little bastard can ride like hell. He still bought a RM250. Put him on my bike and I'm sure it's plenty of power for him out there.

Shovel, should've bought the RM from me.

You're losing more money selling your KX than if you bought my bike. Hell, you could've made cash off of it.

Not trying to rag on your choices of quads. I was just under the impression that you already bought the YFZ. Mini moofer.

Go to the Grand Canyon. They rent mules there. See if you can buy an old used up one. Thats what the KX you bought was.

shovel boy....here's how I see my 400. I've had it for two years. It hasn't let me down. It's all stock except for paddle tires. No, it's not the "fastest", but it will haul my old butt anywhere you want to go at Glamis. It'll climb china in 2nd gear. All I do to it is normal maintenance. It's a great all around quad. I had no trouble keeping up on the group rides through the dunes.
There is also no question that the yfz and 450r are faster than the 400's. That said, if they are out of your price range, don't sweat it. Either save longer, or buy what you can afford and be happy with it. You can make the kawazukis into 450's, it'll just cost more money down the road. Another option that is almost the same as the 400's is the predator. Some like 'em, some don't...but since you're shopping around, you might want to take a look at these. I seriously thought about one of those over my yfz..

Apr 7 2004, 08:20 PM
Get what you can afford. First time I went out, MLK weekend, I road my brothers Kaw 400 all weekend. It had plenty of power for me, and I am sure I have you by a few pounds to go along with a few years. I was ready to purchase a Kaw or Z 400. Went to the dealer and he had 4 or 5 YFZ450's on the floor. Well I now own a BLUE (fastest by the way) 450. It has a little more power, second gear with the Kaw or Z on the hills I can go at them in 3rd and if i hat it right hit 4th. And thats carrying over 200 pounds on its back. Get what you can afford now and start having fun. Worry about faster later on down the line........IMHO
