Man what a day.Today was a very good day.8 years of saving money, buying parts and waiting for the day I would have a sandcar again after selling my old beam car 3 years ago.
After last night I was so frustrated and actually very pissed off.Its not like my buddy and I(who are GM mastertechs for those who dont know) dont know what we are doing I mean come on.I didnt get any sleep last night as I was going over wiring diagrams in my head all night.

Rechecked a couple of things tonight and we got liftoff!!!!

Just a couple more things to do.

That awesome you got it running. I love the enthusiasm over it firing and running. That GN engine sounds sweet. Have fun this weekend.

Nice car I can totally relate tou you. I started my car 5 years ago and some day i'll get it done. Nice job and have some fun for me.
sanddunesaddict
Had a good few days of forward progress.Today it all went back about 5 steps.
I have coolant leaks from about 5 joints but those are an easy fix except for one of the leaks is one of the welds has a pin hole about the size of a needle in it!!!!! I just got them back from having them ceramacoated.
I am pretty disappointed right now.

IMI 101 Starter broke the gear off....never seen that before espcially on a 8.5:1 V6 engine???!!!

Sanddoc
Sorry to hear... better to get it handled now though! Keep on going you will be done soon enough beer.gif
sanddunesaddict
Well after thrashing for 4 weeks now I am still having issues.

It runs as you saw the video.
I had mutilple coolant leaks. The headgasket is leaking oil.
The starter broke the shaft and spit the gear out.

So i get a new starter and smaller clamps for the coolant leaks.

The engine still runs like crap and I am waiting for a knock module that was supposed to be in my hands last thursday.

I am not giving up but it is not looking good for halloween. Just really sucks I missed the regatta

Nolan
Blood, sweat, and tears... If it was easy everyone would do it.... You are close and whether Halloween is your 1st trip or not it will all be worth it....

i have you better check the teeth on the flywheel also.. too much timing
sanddunesaddict
actually found out today without the knock module its in full retard of -30 degrees. So how I thought the 20 year old system worked was wrong.I talked to some older techs today and found out what really happens when there is no knock module.I will have it tomorrow as another guy overnighted me one.
The flywheel didnt get hurt at all.The starter stayed enguaged when it started. It did not grind it just overrevved the starter.shut it off right away and tried it again and the same thing happened.
Shut it off real quick again and tried it a third time and it was broken.

Oh I know I was just bit thats all.It was going so smoothly.

I should still make halloween as all I have to do is bolt in the other 3 seats and belts, rehang the side panels, mount the taillights and apply my "emblems" sraptor.gif

Here is the SAND NATIONAL! 1dude.gif

sanddunesaddict
thank you very much Pete for the awesome pics.

Had a very good shake down/maiden voyage.
Couple of small issues. some already handled.

Thank you Don and the crew at SCU for such a badass car.

Anyone thinking of doing it yourself.......DONT!!! I will never do it again.
It was fun for the first month or so but then its just BS.
I guess it could be different for someone else..especially not a auto tech by trade that works on cars 8-10 hours a day and then goes home to work another 4-6 on a sand car.

Thanks for all the help to everyone that helped me.

I have the worlds most expensive child nap maker.
Mike330R

Hit Ed (Poundsand) and have him valve/tune your shocks..He ilve at Roderunner and looks like Cheech (of Cheech n' Chong). I've spent some dough on my car, $3,500 here, $500 there $2,000 there.. etc. etc.. so far, best money spent. You're a big dude, you want that beast dialed in.

Congrats!

Already got the suspension tuned.Thats another awesome apart about building this SCU....Don told me it should be about 85%....We only had to put a little more preload in it no bypass adjustments on the front,2 turns of rebound,1 turn on the 1st stage and 2 turns on the second stage of compression on the rear and that was it.
I was cruising 85-90 through the big nasty section on the back flat at Dumont.
