This is bench racing right? Just wanted to introduce my new motor---size is top secret but it's bigger than a 3.0 and smaller than a 4.0 tongue.gif My previous motors were all 3.0 liters that have been in all my previous cars. This is a prototype from Subaru, it is basically a 3.6 liter Tribeca motor but has many factory billet parts, and some of my own (bore and stroke have changed)

This is the block with the custom crankshaft i had made, the blueprints alone were $2200 and 20 pages!, Notice how small the case is and 7 main bearing journals, two of the journals are pinned

Here are the JE pistons and some custom rods to my specs, tiny things aren't they? pistons are about 320 grams!

Here's the bottom side of my pistons, note that i have only .080 side clearance--that's .040" per side, this allows me to have a super short pin of just over 2.000" and still have 1.000" of pin to piston contact. light weight here is good tongue.gif These are special JE FSR lightweight forgings that have a very narrow skirt and internally reinforced

I still have to break it in but should be able to run at 15psi by the end of this week-----that should be in the 700 HP ball park, it's experimental but if it stays together it will be going in my SU car (my avatar) pushing boost in the 25psi range, time to clean the dust off of that thing

You mean like this?

My Funco is 2200 lbs, my SU car is around 2000lbs, goal in this car is a true 1000HP, tranny is an S4D with the beginings of an air shifter

looks as though it will rev to the moon, what is redline or shiftpoint on a motor like this??? cant wait to see and HEAR!!!!!

nice work!!! with a light block, small pistons and then add the short skirts. DAMN that motor if the valves can keep up should rev like a Mofo.

sorry if i missed it (the wood got in the way) but is this going to be turbo or supercharged? what kind on compression is it starting with? what kind of RPM's are you hoping to get out of it?

sorry i didn't get to all 20 questions just yet lol

This motor has a redline of around 7800rpm 1dude.gif , Being the engine builder i leave my redline a little higher (like 8000+) for two reasons, 1. Need to find any weak links and 2. Just in case i'm pulling a sweet wheelie and don't want to stop. (hey, is it still o.k. to do these? icon_cool.gif ) it is turboed with a GT series turbo from Garrett and the static compression in the 9-10 to 1 range. Note how the center of gravity is below the crank centerline, and the intake is plastic. The valve buckets are shimless lightweight units that come out of the late model STi 2.5 engine.

John if you put one of these motors powering your right paddle and another powering your left paddle, I am going to get nervous! sraptor.gif

I am going out this weekend too john. Let's hook up. I will be on 1.5 with Diamond Dave or on Pad 3 in the middle. Where ya camping?

Beautiful motor my friend. Like a Ferrari, small, high revving and boost galore!

Were you referring to another builder?

I think Subaru North America would like to see one of these in an STi, say 600hp on pump gas, 4wd, hmmmmmm

Are all 4 cams Vanos? If so what kind of advancement can you get out of them? Are they adjustable? BTW...Looks impressive thumb.gif

Good eye, all four cams are "vanos" (subaru AVCS)with independant cam position sensors for each, this requires a Motec m800 which is what is in my SU car, i have them disconnected in my Funco because the ecu i run in that car can't control them (so there is still more power on tap with my other ecu/car, mainly for more bottom end) the intake cams cam be advanced up to 51 degree's! with the feature disconnected the intakes go fully retarded and the exhaust go fully advanced----basically they're straight up, best position full peak HP

John, you need to ditch the ECU in your Funco then! Get those cams working!

There is a purpose to use thise ecu.....not everyone can afford an ecu that costs $5500 for just the box (no harness) by the time you're done with the ecu, harness, upgrades, etc the electronics could be approaching $8000. the Funco ecu can do 90% of the Motec and cost around $2500 for everything.

I completely understand. The core market isn't going to stup up to an M800. But, you are a Motec dealer and it is your car.

So can this Motor be set up to run pump gas and what would the HP and Torque be? Would it still be turbocharged only low boost? How much lighter is this motor with Turbo and intercooler versus an LS2? If 550 HP would you recommend S4S or 2D? Getting ready to spec a new buggy. You set up my Honda Turbo
SCU car last year with your Intecooler and the car just came alive. Probably 25% Increase in power. Want the same feeling in a new car which now doubt will be heavier. Not totally sold on the LS Motor set up. My car runs great but with the Race gas issue coming up it makes sense to look into a LS Motor, but if I could save weight with your 6 Cylinder it might be worth the money. How much maintenance would the motor require? If I could get 500 to 550 HP on Pump gas and be lighter than an LS I might be interested.

This post will require multiple posts to answer and i can't do it right now at work, however as far as the weight is concerned--it's worse than comparing apples and oranges, besides being much lighter, the CG is much lower and it's "half" of the length out the backend of the car!!!(these two should never be compared because they are too different, ie: you could never make the LS1 engine with the same weight or CG as the Subaru), i have a lot of these running with a 2d but that would not be my recommendation, i would like to see the next step in a tranny like a simple sequential. This motor shines in cars of 2200 and lighter, preferable more like the 2000 range as the torque could never be that of V8, i have not built one for pump gas yet, but it would be possible but not in the near future. I'm still looking at the race gas issue myself and the implications as well as the future use of it. it may not be as bad as you think
donparscale
John get some weight off your car. My two seat mid engine AlumiCraft with a dual turbo NorthStar and a S-5, full body and glass windshield only weighes 1900# I could take out the NorthStar and put in a alum small block non LS motor with twin turbos alky 20% nitro and get at least 2000 HP. Take out those heavy Beard seats and put in one carbon fiber seat, take out the heavy glass windshield and replace with some plexyglass and lighten up a few more parts and it would be less than 1900# with at least 2000HP. May not be too good for duning but it would hawl the mail at the drags. Also you don't need a $5500. ECU. laughing.gif
