Ive got a guy on the line willing to trade me straight across for my LTR 450 for an '04 CRF 450 w/ a desert tank, stabilizer, and some suspension work done. I know in the past some of the 450's had some issues but I dont know what year and what issues. Oh yeah, the guy says the motor was rebuilt in '06 and has little use since. Soooooo tell me what yall think. Just tossin round the idea of a 4 stroke

I just bought an '03 with race suspension and a fresh engine.
Im not sure what your LTR450 is worth, but I think you should REALLY look into that before making the trade.
Perhaps, Ill see ya out there on two wheels!

I might say the LTR has a little more value than the crf.
I would look for an X, with no suspension (because it would be wasted if it wasnt sprung for your weight) but all the other goodies.
I picked up a 05 X a few years back, with a bunch of stuff, beent he best bike I have ever ridden.
Also fresh engine doesnt mean anything unless he has receipts. I would check brake wear, tire wear, sprocket and chain wear, ask when the last time he checked the valves, how easy it is to start, and how it idles.
Pull the axles and see if they are greased, check the condition of the oil (both)

the fact is... I ride the quad about 3 times per year. So it has little value to me. I would get a lot mor use out of the bike. My question is, what factory defects - if any should I be concerned about?

Do yourself a favor and sell the quad first. The quad is probably worth $500 - $1000 more than the bike. CRF 450's are a dime a dozen and an 04 is worth about $2500

The bike is good but not as a straight trade. Make him give you money.

X2.. Those bikes are very cheap out there and the 02-05's are known to have valve issues. I would sell your quad and look for an 06-08 CRF out there. You could pick one up for what you could sell your quad for I bet.

Are you ok with letting the quad go Ken? Following quads on a bike sucks unless the quads are going pretty fast. That's why I picked up my 400ex. The CRF sounds good. I think there is some wiggle room on the trade for some extra cash from him. As stated, make sure it starts easily and listen to the head for valve train noise. The motors are stout if the valves are kept adjusted.

My first CRF450R was a 2004. No issues. The 2002 had some tranny problems but those have been fixed.
One issue with the 2004 is there are some unique changes they did to that year and that year only. It's mainly steering and frame bolt holes...stuff like that. The motor ran great and I got 4 seasons out of it before a top end.
If it already has a damper and desert tank, then the unique 2004 issue is already solved for you. Being that old though...you are probably over due for fork/shock service. That will run you about $600-$1000.
If you can find something newer, the 05-08 are all pretty much interchangeable. The '07s had the best motor of all those years.
Call me if you have any questions.
