Hey guys another question..

Like i said in my other thread I just bought this yz450f from the dealer used, and having never owned a 4 stroke im really paranoid about ruining the motor lol

So basically I hear a rattling toward the top end of the engine and idk if it's normal (I've heard yamahas are kinda noisy anyway) or if my valves need to be adjusted. I asked the dealer if they did that and they said they make sure the bike goes out in good condition. lol so who knows when this was last adjusted. At first the idle was kinda high so I didn't notice the rattling for the first ride. Then when I turned the idle down I noticed it.

How hard would it be for me to check them and/or adjust them myself ? I've heard they cost like 300$ to have a shop adjust them, i'd rather do it myself at that price.

Maybe im just being paranoid haha

edit: also ive heard if the bike is hard to start then you should check the valves... my bike isn't hard to start so could that mean they are fine also? Will I kill my engine if the valves are a little out of spec and I ride it? lol IM SO PARANOID haha

If you're not a member of "Thumpertalk.com" yet, I recommend you join. More info. than you will ever want on 4 strokes. They have video clips on how to check your valves. Not sure how hard it is to adjust the valves. Haven't tried it yet.

No way should it cost $300. Most bike mechanics I know charge 1 hour labor plus parts to adjust valves. Shop rates are anywhere from $65-$90 per hour depending on where you take it. The parts, if needed, usually are shims and don't cost very much.

Couldn't tell you exactly. It's been awhile. Check the "tech section".

where are you located? its quite simple to adjust the valves. takes more time getting the tank and plastics off. btw the rattle that you usually hear it the carb slide, but sounds like the top end.

Whats the oil look like? If its dirty a oil change will probably quite things down

Im in glendale arizona. I'm probly going to look at the valves after this dune trip april 2-4. I'm not too worried about it now because I have heard yz's are the noisiest 4 strokes so hopefully its nothing abnormal.

Did an oil change couple days ago (oil was black, not too black but dark) and that was a disaster lol

The left case drain bolt broke in half when i went to tighten it down in the case, so I had to fight with a drill and a flat head screwdriver to get it out and put a new one in. Super scary drilling into an engine! lol

Haven't ran it much to hear if it got quieter but I will find out come april 2.
