I said that right, pipe, not tubing. Lately I have been getting a lot of call to run pipe handrails around washes etc. I am looking for advice on the best way to do the notching. The pipe is 1 7/8" O.D. schedule 40 pipe. the notches don't have to be perfect like on a sandcar. Can someone please give me some ideas on what is out there? I have done it with the chop saw, sawzall, and even used a plasma cutter. Also remember, this is mostly being done out in the field, so a mill or drill press is not an option.

thanks...

Osoto we use a mechanical notcher for pipe, they come in 1 1/4 and 1 1/2. these are what we use

Or better yet let us build them for you, I have the best handrail guys around tongue.gif

They have a hand operated version you just stick the notcher into. We have a baby ironworker that runs on 110 volts and use it in the field if needed.

I don't think you want to send them to tucson to do 120' at a time... I am fine even with a manual "clicker". I don't do a ton of handrail. I have a 120' job next week and one the week after for about 300'.. what do you guys get per foot for handrail?

We use a manual notcher in our shop. You could mount it on a beam rem. or even build a mount for it to go in a towing receiver. I'll find the model for ya. $35 per line is pretty normal.

1 1/2 pipe, 2 line rail is about $35-$40 a foot more or less.

Actually that is pretty good price if it's a decent quantity. $35 per line is what we get if pitched for stairs with ADA returns and what not. We are probably in that price range for large quantity shopping center type stuff. Too bad no one is building any tongue.gif

Pffft, we dont even have that in for profit anymore these days the bids are so tight. We bid one the other day at 7% and were middle of the pack, fricken guys doing it at a loss I guess.

watched a guy notch the uprights for the top rail on a fence. he just eyeballed it and used a torch. it was close to being perfect every time.
