This year has been extremely brutal for the dog. The ticks are out of control, we use advantix year round (we live in the woods) and now that spring has approached, he is still getting bit by ticks (then they die leave a scab).

I decided on using a flea and tick collar with the advantix. Does anyone know if this is bad to do?

I've never used the collar. I do know the things to be cautious about are

Dosing. I don't know if there's different weight restrictions with the collars like the drops but keep it in mind.
Cats - Don't know if you have any but the stuff they use for dogs can make a cat VERY sick and I believe even die.

Ticks are evil bastards that I would love to eradicate entirely. They got at my dog this last summer. I'd have to give her a rub down whenever she came back inside. I've since put cedar flower pots around my yard, keep bathing her once a month with the flea & tick shampoo and I'll start her back up again on the drops from the vet. I had her on the stuff you can buy at the store but unfortunately they weren't keeping the effers away.
My boyfriend made the flower pots so I had him sweep up all the saw dust and have spread that around too.

Fleas are infinitely evil too rdevil.gif

They are OUT OF CONTROL... all 3 pets have Frontline Flee & Tick... and yet still find them on them??? wtf.gif

That stuff is expensive when you have 3 different sized animals & 1 of them is a cat!! So when it doesn't work I don't get it!! dunno.gif

Who can I scream at for finding ticks on my pets??? Seriously I was practicly crying when I found 3 in one area on my doggie!! That's just horrible!! What can we spray in the yard for them?

Most products break the lifecycle by preventing eggs from hatching, but don't actually kill the live adults...I think that's where the biggest issue is.

Have you tried the Preventic Tick Collar?

From ther website:
How it works:
The ingredient amitraz is an antiparasitic drug. It rapidly paralyzes the ticks mouth parts before killing the tick, preventing attachment of the tick and preventing the transmission of disease. On animals it is used to control ticks, mites, lice, and other animal pests.

I'm not sure how effective it is, I think the most effective treatment is a thorough wash with an anti-parasitic shampoo after exposure, but it's not practical to shampo your dog several times a day.

We have found a tick on one of the dogs in Feb, 0 degrees and below. So, since then we use advantix year round.

What I seem to be finding are small scabs that look like the flea bit him and died. I wounder if the larger scabs are actually a nest that didn't hatch????????

I will look for that preventive tick collar. I bought a sentry collar at the store today. It doesn't smell very good, but he is getting bit bad it this year.

We also get him a Lyme disease vaccination once a year. We have 1000's of deer around the house and that stuff is scary.

He gets a bath once a week for his allergies ( I don't like giving him meds everyday)....

Ticks are a pain in the A$$ and the wallet. We have a company who sprays our yard/house every 2 months and they tell us to have them come back out if we see any signs of ticks even if it is only a week later and the come back out and spray for free as offten as required. Man if you get these in your house you are in for a real treat. Once they start laying eggs It is almost impossible to get rid of them unless you rip the house apart from one end to the other and find and destroy any eggs. The eggs are very visible and you will know when you find them, ussually on the floor under a piece of furniture. Im sure by now you have figured out that we have been down this road. Now If we even find a single tick we go nuts. By the way the bug bombs for ticks are a mess and a waste of time.

Does the Cedar have sometype of repellant effect on tics?

not sure if this is available over the counter but we have used Tempo in the past, as a spray in the yard, and never saw another tick for years, literally. They covered the screen door one time so bad you couldn't see out it, and they ended up killing the roosterer spaniel they were so bad, even after blood tranfusions.

We found one last nite on our begal, so they are going to be bad this year, but with as much ice as we got this winter I wouldn't have thought anything would have lived, it was bitter cold this year!!

Just googled tick eggs! WTF! Thankfully we have not seen those yet.

Everyone insect is supposed to serve a purpose, what the hell do these bastages do?

Eradication!

We can't spray, the area is too large.

One dog had a tick in the middle of feb. Some of these bastages don't die or go dormant. It must have come right off a deer or something. Even the vet was freaked out.

I don't think Cedar has an effect on ticks but fleas don't like it. I even put some cedar oil in their bedding. Yes I've been down the flea road once before too. EVIL FLEAS! I don't remember how much I spent but you have to spray/wash/scrub everything to get rid of the boogers! Thank goodness that was when I was still in my tiny first apartment, I can't imagine all the work with the place I have now!

When we were in Glamis during spring break the kids got eaten alive for the first time ever, my youngest daughter was bitten 45 times on her legs. Even I had about a dozen bites on my ankle areas. What the heck is causing such a bad sand flea, flea, and tick population this year?? dunno.gif

Found a dead tick on the dog yesterday. Maybe this collar is working.

I was reading on the Preventic site that you are not supposed to use that collar with advantix or frontline. The sentry collar has no such warning but looks to be similar ingredients. I will call them today to verify.

Vet also said I can cut the 4 week time to 3 weeks for advantix.

Then we had our boat cushions on the garage floor... they are bleach white... and went to pick them up and found 2 ticks crawling on them!! WTF?? Why are they in the garage?? what are they doing just walking around?? I never see them anywhere in the house... but we also have REALLY dark carpets!!

Auggh... I'm so frustred... I don't know how many there are now... and I'm going crazy!! So what can I treat the inside of the house with? I was thinking a bomb... but after I read they are a waste of time I'm a little sad.

Ok so since last post... we have sprayed the yard with Bayer insect spray that covers Ticks... they say to do it once a week for three weeks straight...

Next is to bomb the house... bought some of those too!!

I have flea & tick spray I am spraying on them DAILY... just in case... coocoo.gif

I can't wait to get a grasp on the situation!

Outdoor spraying every 2-3 months from Lloyd's Pest Control (don't know if they are outside of San Diego) backed with some Frontline/Advantix and you'll be golden thumb.gif Dogs and cats haven't had fleas in years.
