My 5 year old daughter has been asking for a real kitty for about 4 years now. I kept saying no no no, but she kept asking in very sweet ways not pestering about it at all. So yesterday we pulled the trigger, we now have a new addition to the family, a 1 year old tabby cat named Maisey. Please post some good cat stories here so I don't regret this decesion! By the way, my daughter told me
after we got her that she was now a "single mom"...I almost peed myself.

Congratulations! Cats are awesome pets! I have had cats my whole life. I have two right now. Wouldn't ever be without one!

Don't let it go outside would be my only advice (not that you asked for advice).

Thanks for the advice on that. I hope it works out. I am already picking up clumps of cat hair from all over
what hurts?
Not being cat people my Wife & I took in a stray cat, she was really sick and we couldn't sit back & let her die. Sure there were moments of wtf were we thinking as she was clawing the couch or doing the poop scoot across the carpet. Honestly it was a great decision, we can't imagine life without our Banshee smile.gif. Just with anything else there will be an adjustment period, give it time........

That's exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks for that. I am not a cat person, am willing to do this for my baby girl.

Good call. You will find that cats rock. They are the coolest critters around. It will be a few days before her personality starts to come through - a bit longer adjustment with cats than dogs. But once she is comfy it will be like she has always been there. And the quirks of each of them make them fun.

Get some laser pointers and other kitty toys. If there is one thing kitties are good for its laughing at laughing.gif I love spinning the pointer in tight circles...one kitty I was sitting finally stopped and wobbled he was so dizzy. lmao.gif I also get them chasing it and then run it up the wall - they leap up trying to catch it.

Thanks everyone...i just got home and my daughter has her In a doll bed and the cat is loving it so maybe this will work out. What kind of a scratching post should we get? Where is the best place to get one?

It's never too late to become a cat person. I had never had one until I got together with Amy. We now have 7 and I couldn't imagine life without these little weirdos! Right on man...right on.

You're officially infected with the crazy cut bug when you start having these flown in across the country.

Then you start collecting Pixie Bobs with 7 toes on each paw.

Congratulations, did you get a cat from the pound? The last two cats I got was from the pound and they turned out to be great cats, they work as a team! Charlie and Lucy was in the same cage, so I could not separate them. I feel sorry for the poor fly when it gets in here. Don't buy a expensive scratching pad from Walgreens, just buy a cheep one from Walmart. My cats like simple balls made out of aluminum foil. I will be checking back for your pictures smile.gif I agree with dwnhmgirl the only time I let my cats outside is when I'm out there to watch them. I don't want my cats bothering other people and I don't want other peoples hands on my cats, unless if I'm there... Edit = I remember when I was a little kid and got a cat and the 1st time I heard it purr, just awsome....

More expensive scratch pad from Walgreens my cats will not touch it.

Lucy using the less expensive Walmart scratching pad, the scratching pad on top is wore out.

Not bad, $100 bucks later and I think we should be good for at least a week...

Cats are cool, mine comes in every morning when the alarm goes off then hangs out with me while I drink my morning coffee and surf GD.com looking for deals in the classifieds.

She also goes to Glamis with us in the MoHo. She kicks it on the dash of the rig and watches all the buggies go bye.

I think my cats is as addicted to Glamis as I am .

we saw them at petsmart last night and we opted for a carpeted scratch post because my wife said the pads
looked very messy. I sprayed the post with cat nip and she couldn't care less for it...oh well maybe she is still getting aclimated. She also won't play with the darn laser pointer.
what hurts?
We have purchased several toys for our cat but the simple things like a cardboard box, a stringe or even a bag from the grocery store seem to be the favorites.

Cats friekin rule man....all animals do quite frankly.

If you want one of these ill build it with you. Just buy the material and we cool. Dont have to be this big. Cool part about cats is watching them jump and defy physics like a human ninja. icon_ninja.gif

That's a pretty cool setup...now you got me thinking. My daughters room is all frogs, it might be cool to do something to look like Lilly pads. Hhhhmmmmmm.
wopachop
Lily pads!!!!!!!!

The "pads" are just plywood, carpet padding, fabric of your choice.

I had a scratching post many years ago and my cat wouldn't touch it, so then I had the cat declawed! That cat was a indoor cat, but now days they discourage about declawing a cat. This is why now Charlie and Lucy uses a cheap scratching pad. Yes its a little messy, but is a lot more tolerable then my furniture being used a scratching post! My Charlie will not do anything with a laser pointer, he is Siamese and very smart. Lucy on the other hand she likes the Laser pointer.

my wife and i have been around cats our whole lives, and i couldnt imagine mine without a cat being there. Cleo is, or i should say was, my wifes cat but has made it clear that she is my cat dunno.gif she LOVES to be with us and is so set in her routines that on the weekends, we dont get to sleep in! laughing.gif shes 15 years old as of last month and she is one of my favorite cats that ive known. she is declawed and only goes outside if we are there to watch her

CATS RULE!!

This is Reba. A co-worker found her in the street on a rainy day whining and wet, when she was 13 weeks old (approx.) She asked if I would take her, I said ok why not. She is great with the litter box but wasn't so great with the not scatching thing. After she scratched my LCD TV face I decided I was going to declaw her. I felt awful doing it but now she only get scolded for jumping on the counter and can't do any damage scratching. She loves everybody, I will have parties and she hangs out the whole time going from person to person or sits on the stairs like this and just watches. I'm glad to have her, heck I would probably be bored at home without her around.
