As i had posted in the past, I sold my truck(still hurts)and my 06 GTI cause around here we have been in operation getta house mode. I am in escrow and soon to have a new house. Getting rid of cost was a priority but I need to get around so I am picking up a 94 4runner v6 3.0 L it needs a paint job but the body and interior are clean! 230k original miles older woman owns it and has for the last 13 yrs. I have heard that this isn't a good engine. Now i know it is at 150 h.p and it drives like a tank but when it gets rolling it's decent. getting this for my wife once she transfers near our new home. She will have a short commute. My question is has anyone had one of these? My buddy told me that if I have problems with the engine to just swap for a 3.4L v6 toyota engine with a bump of 40 h.p, Has anyone done this? I am only paying 2800 for it. Have to pick it up in an hour so any negative info welcome asap! Thanks in advance

I've had a few toyota trucks when I was younger, the only thing I've heard bad about there v6 motors have issues. Either head gasket, or cracked head problems from over heating. I used to make good money fixing the front main seals on toyota trucks.

Mine were 4x4 and drove the crap out of them, and not nicely and held up great. Good luck with the purchase.

this is a 2wd and she had a radiator crack in o8. She replaced it,oil leak few months back took it in and had it fixed. a/c is cold and the interior is clean. I figure for 2800 its a steal

The problem with the 3.0 was the head gaskets. The metal in them reacted with the block/heads and caused corrosion, eventually eating through a water jacket and causing head gasket leaks. They were actually a really good motor aside from that. Toyota replaced any effected with a brand new longblock and updated head gaskets and the rest is history. That thing has 230K miles on it so it can't be that bad right? You can legally swap in any engine out of a later year vehicle and be smog legal as long as the computer and catalyzers are all intact. It is a very expensive and time consuming process though with good experienced shops charging about $5,000 plus the costs of the engine. In other words, I would suggest running the thing as is. Whether the 3.4L from later models bolts right in or has to have brackets fabbed, I don't know.

The truck has that milage? Does the motor? The motor swaps arent that bad if you know how to work on things. Last weekend my son (with some help from dad) did one on his ranger from a 4cylinder to a 4.0 v6. It took about a day in my driveway. He bought the motor, trans, wiring harness and computer from a guy for $600 off dezertranger.com.

Yea those 3.0 suck. I have one in a 93 truck and it only has about 300k on it. 500k plus on the truck. 1dude.gif

At 230k it probably already had the headgaskets replaced. If it makes mamma happy, then go for it.
