Full Version: Should I Get A Tripod For The 5th Wheel?

This is probably not the permanent home for the RV. When I first parked it here I was concerned about the angle and the weight/stress on the front landing gear. I figured a Tripod would help with the side-to-side motion and would also support some of the weight. I checked several Tripods online and many people comment that they are too short to work properly. Many of the models don't even list the working height of the support.

Photo 1 shows the RV parked and just enough height to pull out the truck. It is off level by about 1.5" over my 4 foot level.

Photo 2 shows the RV almost level (less than .5" off over 4'). This makes the landing gear 32" long! It also puts the bottom of the bedroom at about 68" and the pin at 55-57". This seems VERY high!

What kind of load can the front landing gear handle? 2x the pin weight?

If the landing gear are way under their rated load then maybe I should just get a set of braces that attach to the landing gear (JT Strong Arm or Steadyfast) type.

I would get the JT Strong Arm or Steadyfast

Thats pretty much how mine sits. I do leave it a tad under level so the dew and rain drain forward...
I do have large blocks under the landing gear on mine. I dont see an issue with the weight on the landing gear, I just dont like them run out too far. The blocks keep the legs shorter.

There should be no issue with the weight of the trailer on the landing gear. It should be able to hold up to the weight for years if not the life of the trailer. The tri-pods are meant to help stabilize the trailer during use to reduce the movement of the trailer. I would suggest before dropping the coin on one of those is get some wheel chocks that go between the tires up of the ground, they make a big difference.

x2, some LARGE blocks under the feet. I've seen the legs bend a little when extended out real far.

A tripod will definitely help steady the trailer. As for the heights of the ones available, I can't help you there. The landing gear legs can handle the weight no problem, but they do have a little bit of play in them that the tripod could help stop.
