So what do you folks think? How would you handle this situation?
Mom Shoots Dog Attacking Her 6 year oldJust yesterday I noticed a Rott in my front yard, no owner, just walking around sniffing the trees. My first thought was to tag it with a paintball gun (low power) just to get it to move on but I opt'd for hitting my car alarm instead, did the trick with no harm no foul. If it was attacking one of my kids though I'm sure I would have reacted differently, though I don't know I would have shot the thing with anything lethal.

You'd do what ever necessary to protect your children. I may have opted the glock for a baseball bat. Hopefully some high and mighty D.A. won't try to charge her for discharging the weapon. JMO

I'd kill the dog, find the owner and break his arms.

Good for her. But why are they trying to save the dog at a local vet? The authorities always have the dog put down anyway in cases like this.

She obviously did that as a last resort. I would have been scared @#$less though about maybe hitting a person (kids, bystanders), but it looks like from the story that she was able to get the kids in the house beofre taking that final step.

In this case, I would shoot first, then ask questions later. Then it would be a hunt for the owner!!

I dunno about that. It was chasing after her as she hustled them inside like she was next.
I'd shoot. Protecting the kids is #1.

I'm a dog Lover and would hate to have to kill one, and i don't have kids. But with that being said, if a dog was attacking my neice or nephew i would tear it from limb to limb without blinking and eye!
I would think the same thing, but around three months ago i was at the dog park with my 10 month old 95lb rott (very cool, mild tempered) and a 120lb 10month old came walking over to my dog (both not fixed) they got into big time, i tried my best just to stick my hand in there to tear them apart, i got two teeth punctures into my left hand faster than i could blink an eye. we did get them apart and the other owner apologized but after that i don't think i would win at tearing either one of those dogs apart "limb by limb" while they were going at it

Yeah no kidding huh?
Luckily I got into the habit in the military of not getting tunnel vision and taking in the entire shot picture (including what's behind your target) before firing.

Yeah, that's what I would be afraid of in the back of my mind. I wonder what would get you in more trouble, shooting the thing with a Handgun? a Crossbow? or just going at it with a Kabar?

because the local animal rights activists are gonna scream bloody murder, push to prosecute the mother, and hope to rehabilitate the dog. thats why....

Probably cause they realized it wasnt a pit bull like originally thought but a boxer instead.

Seems totally reasonable to me. A weapon is for protection, and that was how it was used.
