What is your favorite childhood memories?

Mine would be fried bologna sandwiches on white Wonder bread with mayo. Fry the bologna until nice and brown. To keep it from curling up, put a slit in it, at least one, more if ya want to get "crazy" with it. Now that's some serious ghetto food from my childhood right there.

I have grown and found some others that weren't in my childhood, a hot dog sandwich, for 1 other. Slice opoen 2 Nathans hot dogs, and fry them until they are browned as you like tham on both sides. Toasted bread, mayo, Doritos nacho cheese chips, cold beverage, and it's time for comfort food.

One other from my best friend from the AF, Taylor pork roll, if you can find it. It comes in a cloth wrapped, plastic shrink covering with a red Taylor symbol on it. Slice it, and fry with your favorite breakfast for some more comfort food.

You know some of mine............what's your's?

Homemade potato soup, my moms is still the BEST...although mine is getting better every time I make it!
cabbage and polish kielbasa
ham hocks and beans
deviled eggs (omg my moms are off the chain)
HOMEMADE Egg noodles w/shredded beef roast...best part was she'd make them and roll them out and we'd try to sneak the edges off, :yum: then she'd roll them up jelly roll style and slice them SUPER thin. then we all would help unroll them and let them dry all day...icon_biggrin.gif

surf and dune
My favorite was chocolate cake in a bowl with milk. (like cereal) facelick.gif

OMG, we used to do the same cucumber and onion thing, vinegar with water, added some salt and pepper. Red onions are the best I think. No sugar for us, our BBQ sauce was always vinegar based, so we had no problem with it.
We used to have the Preacher over EVERY Sunday for fried chicken. Well, you'd call him Preacher, we just called him Daddy!!!!!

That there's cucumber salad. Skin and slice your cucumbers and sprinkle with salt. Let them sit for a little while in a colander. The salt will help release the excess water. Then mix those bad boys with some vinegar and a itsy bit of sugar, sliced onions, and my grandma would add a little bit of vegetable oil in there too, maybe to protect the cucumbers dunno.gif Heck, I just make it the way she says to make it. Sprinkle some paprika (we're Hungarian) on top and let it chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes or so. I LOVE cucumber salad.

There is also a version where you use sour cream instead of all that vinegar. Equally good, but I've never made it that way.

I always remember eating a hunk of fried liver. Also, sugar and butter sandwiches. Circa 1982. We were pretty poor.

Momma don't like no miricle WHOOP up in this house. I don't disagree, it just doesn't agree with my tastbuds. I can always pick it out on a sandwich.

Never knew there was a difference between miracle whip and mayonaise until a year or 2 ago. Wife told me. I'm either not that picky or never dumped mounds of the stuff on my sandwiches to taste a difference.

Hey, careful, that Kelster is my new friend, because of that comment!!!! I just don't like miricle whip, I don't know what it is, other than a taste that's not to my liking.
Cacti, I used to do the milk and sugar thing in a bowl for cereal, then drink the milk to taste test it. Then I'd have to start over to eat my cereal. OMG, I can't imagine doing that now. Alcohol is my way for sugar intake, and a fine way it is!

During the Summertime they used to hand out sack lunches at the rec centers, (1 per kid, no seconds).

We'd peddle down there and grab a lunch, but they were never satisfying.

We learned that if we peddled to the next town we could grap a second lunch.

We would earn $$$ doing yard work. We'd sometimes go to All-You-Can lunch eat at Shakey's.

One day the Manager came up to us and offered to refund our money if we would stop eating and leave. He couldn't keep the buffet line up fast enough for his regular customers..lol

Free lunch was the best as a broke kid

Good times.

miracle whip = poo poo gawd i hate that stuff!!

i still make the cucumbers and onions in vinegar. here is what i do.

i get myself a large spaghetti sauce or mayonaise jar (glass only) completely clean.

i slice up cucumbers about 1/4" thick (any thinner, and they get mush in a couple days), and slice up either red or brown onions thin, about 1/8" thick or thinner if you desire, and a couple jalapenos thinly sliced (habaneros if its only for me).

i layer them in the jar as follows:

layer of cucumber, layer of onions, sprinkle with sugar, lay a couple slices of jalapeno on top, and repeat, until jar is full. i toss in a teaspoon of whole peppercorns, and a dash of salt. fill jar to top with white vinegar, and put on lid. put in fridge for about 12 hours or so, and turn jar over for another 12 or so hours. in about 24 - 36 hours i have sweet and spicy cucumbers and onions.

i can eat a whole jar by myself. i love them, problem is, they dont love me. heartburn city....

beware, the habanero version will light you up!! :ebbg:

I just remembered one.............

My great grandfather (Atlas Dargon Williams) would walk about 12 miles to Munn's Grocery to buy 3 great big honey buns, the old style ones. Well, there wasn't a choice, I guess, it was in the 60's. That man would never come to the front door, he would walk thru the woods and come up to the back door. "Pa" would hand my sister, brother and me each a honey bun right when he walked in the door. To this day, I can't eat a honey bun, because of him. I'll have one the next time I see him......hope he has one ready for me.

Wow reading this really brought me back.

Amy - you must try cheetos and yogurt. YUM dip the cheeto in your yogurt and enjoy

We did the cucumber/vinegar thing. Grandpa called them poor man's pickles. It was a favorite snack of his and mine. I LOVE me vinegar. I can eat it straight.

Homemade tortillas. OMG heavenly. Fresh homemade tortillas are better than a freshly baked choc chip cookie to me. I remember being called in with my friends so we could each get one freshly made. Didn't even add butter. Rolled up with a napkin to help us not burn our hands.

Fried corn tortillas. Just that. I'd get hungry waiting to fry all the tortillas for dinner, so I'd 'accidentally' tear one removing it from the oil. Oooops guess you can't do anything with that - guess I'll eat it. Now that I'm adult I always just set one aside to munch on and I don't have to pretend to ruin it icon_biggrin.gif

Olive tacos Fried corn tortillas loaded with olives. a little cheese, garlic, and salsa. Sounds weird, everyone makes a face the first time I serve it to them. Then they finish up by making sure they know how to make them at home.

Rushkemshnooshkem. No idea how you really spell it, It's a danish dish that I think unless you were raised on would hold no appeal. Basically a creamy soup with LOTS of Turnips, some taters and onions.

Fried ham sammich. I HATED ham when I was little so my mom doused it in Heinz 45 sauce with a little honey right after frying it. I ate it right up!

Fried hotdogs and mac n' cheese. Slice the dogs up, fry em till they start to get a little black. Put on top of the macaroni and eat!
