last trip out, the battery in my predator crapped out on a ride. and i mean it just decided it had enough and that was that. the bike pull started and ran fine for the ride back and once i swapped batteries from my brothers predator, it started and ran fine tho i did not take the bike on another ride once i switched batteries. today i was checking the charging voltage and found with the bike off, i had about 12.3 volts (been sitting since the night ride) and bout 14.9 volts with the bike running at idle. is that a normal charging voltage for quads?? i checked my brothers bike after putting the battery back in it and it was about 14.8 volts. i just want to see if this is normal or if the regulator has taken a poo poo and is torching the battery. im used to cars, which are usually limited to about 14 volts when running

thanks

Hmmm. 14.9 when revved up a little would be in the normal range but 14.9 at IDLE sounds a little high. Unless your charging system is designed to produce full-charging at idle, which most ATVs are not (from my learnings anyway).

I've seen what I thought were somewhat high voltages on my bro in law's Z400. (14.4+) You didn't say what the voltage was above idle, I'm assuming it was normal. As long as we're not talking about a brand new battery that has crashed then I wouldn't worry too much about an overcharge.

i couldnt check it above idle. the volt meter i was using didnt have clips and i dont have 3 arms to make it work so i dunno.gif

Sup John... why not just turn the idle up to check? I would say its ok... especially if your brothers was within .1 v......

fuel injected ? might be a little higher than a carb motor. just thinking ?

Just put a grip of lights on it to use up some of that juice. tongue.gif

13.5-15 volts it should charge around. no more/no less. sounds good. you just had a bad battery man. it happens. especially with whoops and jumps.
