Have a 2005 crf450r and I want to covert the stock pipe to be a US Forest compliant pipe. There are several companies, like DR.D and Pro Moto, that sell spark arrestor conversion kits. Anybody here done this type of conversion? If so, is it a pain in the arsh? What says you?

I use the PROMOTO billet end cap and like it.

Unless you get crazy with the motor, you really don't gain much over a new pipe so for $130, this does the trick.

If you ride hard on it, you need to watch the pop rivets and be prepared to replace them as needed.

I will say this can be a little tricky as the stock end cap is sealed in place and have to bang on it a little to get it off. Be careful not to screw up your can.

You will most likely need to repack the muffler when you do this since it is a '05.

If you have any questions, hit me and and since you're local, I can help you out/do it for you for a ice cold beer if need be.

I have also used the Pro Moto Billet end cap. They are very nice but expensive and a little work. May suggest searching Ebay for a used Aftermarket slip on that has a spark arrestor already built in. From there you can now sell the stock slip on and most likely get your money back. Good luck.

Agreed on the ProMoto cap, pain in the ... to get the old cap off. Just don't try to save the old cap, I don't think you could if you wanted to! Like Mac says, it can be tricky. Whats nice is you can take the screen out of the cap by just removing four bolts when your done and be back to an open pipe. I use one for when I race district races but take the screen back out where its not needed.

Not looking for any power gains. Just want to be able to hit the trails locally here in SD County. When the bike was bought new, the stock pipe was swapped out for a DR.D header pipe and exhaust, so hopefully the packing in the stocker is still good since it was never used. I will definately hit you up if I need some help.

Possibly my next step.

Cool! Taking the screen out is a nice option.

Does the bike still have the DrD exhaust? Check with them as they most likely sell an insert. I ordered one from Pro Circuit and it is about $28

Yeap I still have it. Actually, I have two Dr. D exhaust systems. One has a pinched header pipe from a crash at Cahuilla. Doug Dubach was there and he sold me a new complete exhaust for $150 and a soda from my cooler. Awesome dude!
Anyways, I knew they sold a DIY spark arrestor kit for a stock pipe, but I didn't realize they did a complete spark arrestor service on all their DR. D pipes. Just got off the phone with them and they said for $100.00, they will add a spark arrestor kit, repack the muffler, and buff out stainless steel and rebadge the canister. Looks like that will be the route I take.

Sounds like your best bet right there.
