Has anyone ever made a cr250 street legal in cali? Duel sport kits are available, butt what is the process to get a plate. Thanks, SG
BansheeBoy914
someone correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure you can't do it anymore. they have to be bought already street legal, and sometimes they'll pull the plates during title transfer
CrazyJohnny
Can't be done. Only street legal dirts bikes now days come from the factory. They changed the law about 3 years ago making it illegal to get a bike street legal unless it came legal from the factory.

Once again why does California have to be soo flipping gay!!

I want a plate for the street legal only trails. Sometimes you can make a better loop useing a street legal trail, or go to a place that can only take street legals. Fish creek at Ocotilla is a perfect example.

Not anymore!
I had a 2002 CRF450-R, CA plated with Baja Design Dual sport kit, flushmount blinkers, folding mirror and a horn. Tons of fun.
Before Aug 2003, you could get green stickered bikes street legal. Can't do it anymore. Buy something done from the factory.

Also...xr 50's were actually 49cc and the fell into the category of a scooter...used to ride mine all over till one day at a 4 way signal a cop across the street gets on the PA and told me I can't ride that thing on the street. I get pulled over and he was kind of laughing..then got a call and said, look I gotta go and when I get around the corner...what you do on this thing is up to you.....So I rode it home!

Dont even try red sticker bikes, The key word is " custom construction " or you buy a plated bike in AZ and has to be over 7500 miles to bring into Cali but all you have to do is buy a digital Endurance- Trail Tech and punch in 7500 miles and take it to the DMV. My group has 3 KTM 300 2 strokes, all 2010 this way.

Mine came from Florida. 2003 Cannondale S440. Came with a speedo that had 8500 miles on it. sraptor.gif Went to AAA and registered it.

I just took my 450x to get an Arizona plate, they didn't even look at the bike, just handed me the plate and new reg. I put the baja designs kit on it with the trail tech speedo, you do have to carry az. insurance which I piggy backed through my broker here in California. Also they will forward the yearly reg. to my ca. address. This would probably work for you if you have a physical address in az. and try to stay away from registering it in maricopa county as I was told they require emissions testing.

Thanks for the 7500mi. trick I might transfer it over here next year.

I have an Az. connection May be I'll try that. Thanks all, SG

couple fun facts:

DMV uses the VIN # to indicate the mfg and style of motorcycles, this is what they have used to revoke a CA plate and reissue a green sticker on 'dual sport' bikes.

Even if you have an address in Arizona but live here in CA (your license is from CA) it will not make the bike legal. According to the Vehicle Code you have 10 or 20 (been a little while) days to register an out of state vehicle because you live in CA. Yes you'll be able to ride it but the first ticket or stop by the PoPo will get the plate in the system and that is proof enough for the courts and the DMV.

I'm looking for a dual sport now, my BMW 1200GS is not cutting it for the trails. Very hesitant to even buy an older bike that has been converted and has had a plate for years thinking DMV may flag it when it changes hands.

CA is out of their minds with all this CARB crap and diesel and eventually m/c smog.

You think Az drivers license and Az plate would fly in Ocotilla? Can you have a lisense in two states at once?

No you can't. You have to forfeit your current license when you apply for a new one beer.gif
