Harkins Theatres owner cited for animal neglect

PHOENIX — The owner of an Arizona-based movie theater chain has been cited for animal neglect after he allegedly left his dog in a car for more than three hours.

Scottsdale police said Dan Harkins, 57, will appear in a city court at a later date.

An officer was flagged down Saturday night by someone who noticed a 5-year-old female corgi alone in a BMW sedan parked at the Harkins Shea 14 movie theater.

Harkins later returned to his car and told officers he arrived at the theater at about 3:45 p.m., but had checked on the dog multiple times.

Because the temperature outside exceeded 100 degrees, police said Harkins was cited for animal neglect and for illegal parking in a handicapped space.

Calls by The Associated Press to Harkins at his corporate offices in Scottsdale for comment were not immediately returned Monday. But Harkins told Phoenix TV station KPHO that he checked on his dog Tanga regularly and gave her water twice in a dish on the car's floorboard.

Harkins also said he couldn't bring his dog into the theater because of health code concerns. He said he planned to pay the illegal parking fine and show some public service announcements at his theaters about not leaving pets in a car.

Harkins Theatres, founded by Harkins' father in 1933, operates 30 theaters with more than 400 screens throughout the Southwest. A majority of the theaters are in Arizona with others in California, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas.

Over 3 hours while the outside temps are 100++++? Dude is definitely guilty of neglect. Why the heck did he take the dog to begin with?

So he leaves his dog in the car, but it's ok because she had water. Like the dog knows (or cares) about the difference between baked and steamed.

Somebody should wrap his ignorant a$$ in a full-length fur coat and put him in his car for three hours in 100+ temps. Maybe break his legs so he can park in the handicapped spot legally. Dumb people make dumb mistakes... It's no secret that leaving a dog in a car is neglect... The point is, if you or I did that, we would spend some time in jail... I saw him on the news- kind of an arrogant guy. That family has been in Arizona long enough to know better.

Outside temp of 100= takes 15 minutes to go from 75 degrees to 115 degrees in a car interior once the air is turned off. Another 15 minutes sees up to 140 degrees. This is not hard to figure out. Why couldn't the dog have stayed home?

I've made my fair share of mistakes but this case is not a mistake, it is a jackass move... That's all I'm saying... Hope you don't have any hard feelings...

He was too busy raking in the $$$$$$ from Twilight opening to care about his dog, seriously why not leave him home? Or tell one of his employees to get out there and take care of the dog OUTSIDE OF THE CAR.

People that leave their dogs in cars are bad, but every single summer there are people that "forget" their KIDS in the car!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy hell, how does that happen? they should all go to prison and that way they don't have to worry about forgetting living things in their car.

The Arizona section contains the state's anti-cruelty and animal fighting provisions. A person commits cruelty to animals if he or she intentionally, knowingly or recklessly subjects any animal under the person's custody or control to cruel neglect or abandonment, fails to provide medical attention necessary to prevent protracted suffering to any animal under the person's custody or control, inflicts unnecessary physical injury to any animal, or recklessly subjects any animal to cruel mistreatment, among other things.
