Hi all,

With the recent events of not having a dog in my life it is time to adopt! But before that I need to make sure my future pups will be safe when I'm not home and around. For this reason, if anyone has a out door kennel for sell shoot me a pm! But nevertheless I've been looking around for kennels either on craigslist or online stores. And I wanted to ask you all since this is new to me ,my next dogs will be outdoor dogs, and I've never bought a outdoor kennel but what are your suggestions on chain link style or the nice welded bars. Check out this link, and tell me if this size is appropriate for one or two 50-60 grown up dogs.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/ASPCA-Premium-Do...6-Dogs/10811481 the kennel will be used when I'm not home or have guest over, but I think when the dogs grow up, become smarter they will be run -free dogs in the backyard (which is secure).

Thank you for adopting!

I would suggest maybe a doggie door instead? I know that most of the rescues I work with insist the dog(s) be indoors primarily. Maybe that is because it is hotter than Hades here in AZ?

have you ever considered crate training them (indoors)?

If you are going to do a dog run outside then make sure it is big enough for them to play in and eat in and slepp in and poop and pee in. minimum 20' x 10' with a good source of shade all day long!

Thank you all for the suggestions, I will definitely be getting a bigger kennel than what I posted.

This is what I'm looking at right now

I never crated my dogs because I thought it was "mean". Well the foster puppy we have now thinks the XL crate we have is his "bedroom". icon_biggrin.gif He sleeps in there at night, when we are at work and if we are out in the pool etc. Sounds like a lot of time, but honestly I leave the door open and he will go in there all the time for a siesta. It is a win-win, he doesn't wreck the house when we aren't home or asleep, he has been trained to enjoy being in there (lots of soft blankies, chew toys, bones etc) and I now get it that it is not MEAN just another way of having dogs.

That is what i want to incorporate in my future pups, i think they call it crate trained. I want the kennel to be their home or place to stay not a evil place to punish.

I absolutely love having our dogs crate trained!!! They love it too!!!

My Maggie used to do that with her crate too. She loved it. It was HER special place!

We crate trained ours.
But with both of us being at work all day it was just too long to leave them in the crate, kids coming and going
on different schedules.
We had a doggie door put in and have the crate inside the house facing the doggie door, so they can come in to cool
off or nap. icon_biggrin.gif

I'm happy to introduce to you all Diesel! I adopted her from my local crowded shelter and I'm glad I did, I walked through many dogs and this one caught my eye. Very crate trained from the shelter, it's 0001 hours right now and she's in the 6x6x4 outdoor kennel right now in her igloo dog house sleeping! Very awesome dog, some scars show that during her ten months of her short harsh life my vet said she was probably involved in some self defense fights. But all in all, great dog I'm a Pit Bull Terrier, 'bully breed' advocate. I will always adopt and encourage other people to adopt.

Crate training is awesome for training your dog but you can't leave him there too long at first. He has to learn to hold it longer and longer. I used to have to leave my dogs outside, so i put a tarp over the kennel to make sure they always had shade. In the summer if they had to stay in there I would put a kiddie pool in for them to cool off. Once they got older all we had to do is leave the TV on and they stay entertained. Or at least I hope they do.

I will say, if he is sleeping through the first nighst, then it should be down hill from here.

I crate trained all my dogs and they have all done awesome. Like was said above, you have to make their crate, "their domain, and/or their comfort spot.
The worst is the first week when they are puppies. Mine seem to like to keep me awake for the first week we live together. Even from the garage Lol I can hear the darn puppies. Might hurt to hear him cry, but he will get over it faster if you let him be and do not baby him or answer whenever he cries.

But once you spend the time to train him right he will be the best thing that happened to you for a long time.

From the size of kennel you are talking about, you should be fine

Just make sure they have enough water and shade.

Best of luck and much props for adopting a dog and saving him.

No question about adopting, I just wish I knew some history on this sweet girl. I mean she had to be someones dogs to be ten months old and 44lbs, someone had to own her before letting her be a stray. But I'm glad I got her, it was either a 3 month old pitbull which for sure would have gotten a home, but I couldn't resist skipping early puppy hood straight to almost "big dog" hood. It's 0705 hours and I just took her for a walk and let her do her business played with her and put her back in her kennel, she sat for a minute and went back into her igloo!

Wish I would of known earlier! What do you got? any 6X10X4? Something same width, but just longer will due.

Enjoy the pictures, she's has a little rough skin but vet prescribed some shampoo and antibiotics.
Last picture is how she sat looking at me at the shelter! Clearly it worked.
