Every time we have a quake event in So Cal you have to think in your mind, is the big one coming ?? Are you prepared ??. Seems like quite a bit of siesmic activity lately. Take a look at the USGS map on their website. it is peppered with recent activity from below Mexicali up through Palm Springs. What will happen if it does come ?? I would bet many here have no quake insurance. Will our Bankrupt federal government bail us out ?? or will we abandon our damaged uninsured underwater homes like those walking away from their underwater mortgages. What do you think ?
Cheapo
All I know is I do not want to be in a Home Depot next time any quake hits. I am usually not worried about earthquakes but those shelves in the plumbing section move a lot!
Timmay
Not prepared too well, going to start stocking up though.
No quake insurance for us.

What will happen if it does come ??

Depends on the type of ground your house is built on.

I've been getting jumpy more and more.....
Yesterday I headed straight for my front door.
I keep thinking as it's trembling that it's going to start shaking like a fricken bomb hit us...

Same here. I keep telling myself to put a back pack in the truck with food, water, and clothes since I work 45 miles from home. gotta do that soon.
Mac
I hope so.

I want a disaster of epic/Bibilcal proportion. I want to bring this country to it's knees and focus on the things that matter...human goodness, survival, helping one another.

In the face of disaster, people would finally tell the homos, libtards, and special interest to STFU on their little pet projects like gay marriage, saving the 3 toed sloth and crap like that and focus on just getting the country back together.

I need to stock up on beer.. beer.gif

Alot of us have Motorhomes- Trailers ect. A friend of mine once told me never bring it home empty. Fill it up with water, propane and gas, use seafoam or Stabil for gas to stabilize it and fill the cupboards wtih canned goods or whatever will keep. Make sure your Generator works good.

Oh this thread is about the earth shaking.... oooops I get it now. Uh no never worry about it, maybe I should more.

A good biblical disaster would be good around here. Reduce the population by about 1/4 would be messy, sickening, and wonderful all at the same time.

I'm more interested in seeing what people will do. If we really have a "big one", it's going to do a hell of a lot of property damage to peoples homes. My bet is very few have earthquake insurance. Property values are already at epic lows. Many people are upside down on their loans. Will they decide to walk away ?? The feds dont hand out free money. Disaster relief comes as a low interest loan to be repaid
NascarGirl99
I dont think so.. they've been saying that for years laughing.gif.

However my dad bought me a large, well equipped first aid kit and I keep several cases of water.
Rusty
IIRC, when the Northridge quake hit, and totaled many homes, usually only the ones that caught fire were paid off.

Safety Tip: quake hits - light a match!

That doesn't make sense because the earthquake caused the fire dunno.gif
tsanchez
Well I think you would be more worried if there were no quakes that means its building up, every time there is a small one its a relief to the fault. My perspective of course but 1cheff.gif

It's an insurance thing. If the earthquake broke a water pipe and flooded your house, insurance could cover the flood damage. Maybe one of the insurance people on the board could verify that for me though.

J240Z
No earthquake insurance here - Cost WAY too much and your more likely to lose your home in a fire anyway. As far as what would we do if the house was totaled - That's a wait and see senario - Maybe what Rusty suggested dunno.gif

We keep plenty of water, canned goods and the trailer ready to roll thumb.gif
On that note be sure to cycle the cans out every so often.
Mac
No need for earthquake insurance. If we have one that destroys my house, I'm dyeing my skin black and the savior will provide.

Interesting topic. I plan on relocating to socal in the near future. Being in IL, I tend to think about this issue often. Do I need insurance, what kind of insurance, where should I look to buy, what is the house made of and built on etc etc. Especially Since we had a mild quake here within the last 3-4 weeks. And we are also near a rather large fault.
My decision, RENT!

Anyone have a 3bd 2+b with 2 car garage for rent in socal?

My wife and I experienced our first quake in Indonesia last year after arriving 6 hours earlier. We had a disaster plan in place for such an event. Especially if we were separated for some reason. One thing I have in my SHTF bags are portable water filters. I have one for fresh water, now I just need to buy the desalinization filter next. In fact, every boat should have these filters on board their life rafts

Without water, everything else is moot.

Years ago we we parked our toy hauler at Sunshine on Parker strip for the summer along with a group of friends. We missed a weekend that they all went out. Well apparently a Ram came into our camp and anything he saw his reflection in he, well Rammed. no pun intended.

So we went out two weeks later and heard about it and most of our friends turned into insurance and it wasnt covered because it was considered "An act of God"
So learning from their mistake we turned in as running over a pallet on the road. got it covered!

I have those as well. In the day when I used to backpack, everyone would get at least one bottle to store in their pack. Forgetting a filter at the water source or losing a filter mid trip kinda sucks.

ins companys are kinda weird. if a pipe breaks and floods your house, they will pay to fix the damage but not the pipe. if a gas line breaks and burns your house down, they will pay for the house but not the pipe. if a flood comes (unless you have flood insurance) your screwed cause its an act of nature.

I agree. Boiling is the definitive best choice. My MSR stove will burn basically any type of fuel and will boil water immediately without a smoke signal..........
http://www.cascadedesigns.com/msr/stoves/e.../xgk-ex/product

My water situation looks like this. Filter, pills, boil. Two back up systems.

However, depending on the situation it might not be an option for various reasons to boil. Once you start to boil on a traditional fire, a smoke signal is now apparent to everyone that might be looking for one.

The filters from Katadyn are amazing. Some have capacities of up to 20,000 gallons. That is essentially a lifetime. These filters are used by rescuers, seals, adventures and anyone else that will be without a reliable water source for extended periods of time. They are also built extremely tuff to prevent a POS plastic component from breaking after a drop. I have trusted my life to Katadyn and would not hesitate to recommend one to anyone for any application. Seriously, I don't travel without it.

Like these??

Think I might get a few...

I think any Katadyn are better than everything in their respective price range.

I have not used that one, so I can't honestly comment. The rating on that is .3 micron 500 gallon.

I like this one. This is what I use. The design has not change since I bought mine in 93. .2 micron and 13,000 gallons.

These are not desalinators. Just standard fresh untreated water.

IIRC, when the Northridge quake hit, and totaled many homes, usually only the ones that caught fire were paid off.

Safety Tip: quake hits - light a match!

That doesn't make sense because the earthquake caused the fire dunno.gif

ins companys are kinda weird. if a pipe breaks and floods your house, they will pay to fix the damage but not the pipe. if a gas line breaks and burns your house down, they will pay for the house but not the pipe. if a flood comes (unless you have flood insurance) your screwed cause its an act of nature.

as to the original question... ive gotta ocean front property in arriz-zona, from my front porch you can see the sea.
just think the dunes will be on the coast tongue.gif

I carried the Pur Hiker when I was doing Search and Rescue. Worked well, was very light and easy to maintain. Only drawback is the capacity of the filter element - ~200 gallons between changes. But for a couple of people, that's quite a bit of water for the price. If I was starting out getting my SHTF box together, I'd go with the Pocket Microfilter at 13K gallons.

Another thing to think of, is protecting your food, water and family... 22cal? 12ga? 30-30? pistol? All the above?

All the shaking is being done by a small fault, west of the valley. It runs from the southern part of the Laguna Salada, through Seeley and north towards Borrego. I would worry once the San Andres starts moving, that one runs all across calif..

Having been in several natural disasters the most problematic things are;

1) Water

2) Sanitation

3) Mob mentality/disturbances at Retail/Commercial sales establishments.

Like others have said prep for storing 1 gallon/water/per day per person for at least 1 week.

People are spolied and think they need fresh food daily. You'd be suprised what dry goods you can dig up in the cupboard and stretch out for at least a week.

And buy a shovel and tarp to dig a honey pit....laughing.gif

Or buy one of these;

Pur are very good filters no doubt. If I didn't do a Katadyn it would be PUR or MSR. I have seen a few purs break back in the day. They probably fixed the problems by now.

How many can you afford? smile.gif

I think in a SHTF scenario, I would go with most common rounds out there. They all have their +/-'s.

One thing I don't have is a small suction/trash pump to replenish the TH tanks from a stream/lake etc.
