I am done with my engine mods and am now looking for the perfect gearing ratios. I have an 04 Predator Troy Lee and can get up olds in 3rd but my power band is definitely still in 2nd. I have the stock sprockkets still on the bike and am thinking about dropping 2 teeth in the front and going up 3 in the back. everyone knows that down 1 in the front is the same as 3 1/2 in the back. I do not want to do the trial and error thing. Has anyone got any suggestions? I dont care about top spped as much as I care about taking advantage of all the torque I have going up hills. I have done bore, piston, cams, Edelbrock Pumper, long throw stroke, K&N, etc.etc. Got any suggestions?
SHOCKER
Have you taken your predator out with all those mods? if ya havent i would take it out with all those mods and see how it does, i wouldnt drop 2 teeth in the front unless you get some bigger rear tires, but most people drop 1 tooth in the front and i dont remember what they do in the rear but when the drop a tooth in the front the dune in a higher gear like instead of 2nd they dune in the same spot in 3rd, you have the same type oof gearing as my Z, i dune in 2nd and any hill i go up im in 3rd

if themods you have done has increased the power and torque, then you should be able to opull a stock gear pretty good. if anything maybe go bigger on the rear sprocket by one or two teeth. id leave the front alone. my predator is bine stock and i think it pulls olds just fine. it'll pull 4th, but third is much faster.

I must weigh a bunch more than you. I weigh 230 6'3", I need to make my gears taller for more variety. Don't get me wrong, my Pred puls up that hill like nothing is there. I would just like more options while climbing it.

Why just go up in the back instead of doing smaller in the front? Is there advantages going one side over the other? Don't really wanna break anything.... Well, unless I win..... icon_twisted.gif

This is a small problem overall. But one must remember you can't gear it to run well in all the dunes. If you gear it to run Olds well it will bogg at China wall ETC. The best way to sort out your gearing is to get a buddy whose bike is really consistant and run him up the hill you run most. Then go back to camp and change your gears to what you think will help and then go run your buddy again. If you are faster than before COOL if not then go the other way.
I run a 86 250R with a CT 350 kit. Stock gearing is 13/39 With the extra power we settled on 14/39 and it pulls Olds in 5th HARD!!!!
Good luck

going one tooth smaller on the predator in the front will casue you to hit the rev limiter alot. a couple teeth in the back isnt as dramatic of a change aas the front. last time i was at glamis on my predator i weighed 258. also your tire choice will affect how well you go up olds. i run extreme haulers 8 paddle.
