Anyone of you in 'That 70 Club' ever have a problem with the gas tank being rusted beyond repair?

I have a 185s ATC which 'had' a pin hole in the tank. While removing the paint I quickly discovered that most of that area was rusted out. I patched it with gas tank repair putty and bought a cleaning/coating kit called "Kreem". It comes with a chemical that you pour in which removes rust and etches the surface. This chemical 'found' many more badly rusted area's. I still applied the Kreem rubber like coating to the inside but I highly doubt it will last very long. Most of the bottom of the tank is rusted beyond repair icon_sad.gif

Only thing I can think of is to take it to a custom cycle shop and have them make me a new lower half.

Are replacement tanks even made for a 185s? If I buy a used tank I would think it would also be in bad shape since these things are over 20 years old.

Any suggestions?

If you do happen to find a place that sells 185s stuff, please let me know, I have an '84 that I am re-doing, thanks

Thanks for that site. Looks like I will need some stuff from them.
I am still going to look for a used metal tank. May want to have a nice paint job on it and plastic's.

Do they still make plastic for it?

If its real bad your better off going used on ebay. It can get real spendy for tank restoration. I spent a few hundy just having a tank cleaned and coated by a professional place, not to mention even if the tank needed a full restore becasue of rust/and/holes. I think crnacnac's engine guy does tanks or has a place?

my cousin just redid a 185 that was sitting for at least 15 years. his tank was rusted too. he took it to a shop and they sealed it for about $90. the sealer looks and works great. i also seen a 185 with an IMS plastic tank. the tank looked pretty cool, although it did not have an original look. try checking out imsproducts.com for more information.

I used that Kreem on a rusted tank on a YSR 50, and it didn't work too well. The tank was in the same kinda condition you are talking about. I don't recomend it. If you have any holes, the tank is too far gone for Kreem. If you happen to noce some surface rust on the inside, go for it. Just don't expect it to fix holes. I called a salvage place and they tracked one down for me. Can Neandrathol (SP)
