Went to check on our RV today we found that the door locks were broken. We were lucky that nothing was stolen out of ours. The people that store their RV's close to us had been ransacked and TV's stolen. So, my question is what would be a better lock than the stock locks. Is there any better locking systems that are better than stock RV Locks.
Can we use a standard deadbolt. Ideas please. My husband wants to use a bear trap. JK

Lock the deadbolt type lock on the side door from the inside and exit out the back (if it's a toyhauler). Then lock up the back ramp door with good locks and lock the side door lock from the outside.
Seems like it would help a little more because you couldn't get in by just popping the side door lock.

Check www.tattletale.com they make a stand alone alarm system that cost about $750 for equipment and $250 a year for monitoring. It duns on batteries or ac. Just a thought

The picture shows the lock cylinders out of door how did they get them out? Did thew door open once the locks are removed?

I'm thinking of a cover plate with a lock much like a shipping container thats hinged and closes ove the mounting screws it would be ugly ass hell but would protect the door locks from breakin.

We think they used a screw driver and a hammer and remove the cylinders. They were broken out of the locks. The trailer near ours. Did not have the cylinders at all. One of the RV's they crawled thru the side vents. We called the security and they are going to call the other owners to let them know that they got broken into. I am going to call a lock smith in the am. I really don't want something ugly on the RV unless it's the only choice.
We were able to replace the lock today with the same stock lock. I want something more secure.

Couple of things:

http://www.rvlock.com/index.html
http://www.modmyrv.com/2009/03/18/rv-door-storage-locks

We also use a motion sensor that's set when we leave and door alarms.

Put those stickers on the windows that say there's a security system.

Nothing is foolproof but it might just get them to move to an easier target.

There are few other little tricks - (PM only)

I was thinking about a better lock, and then just figured they would just brake a window if they wanted in bad enough. Or cut the skylight off the roof. I have space at my house to store a few trailers, but even at my house you just dont know what could happen. The monitoring system seem good, or even the stickers like Jimandmelisa mentioned.

Sorry about your trailer and the hassle your going though.

Just a little note...those cylinders can be pulled pretty easy. My key got stuck once, and I pulled hard to get it out and ended up pulling the cylinder out with my bare hands.

A deadbolt would work if you could find a this model. Most are set up for 1 3/8" thick doors.

Unfortunately, even if you were to install a built proof lock and door this will not prevent a crook from getting in.

They'll just bust out a window and get in.

Upgrade your insurance and move to a more secure/less crime location.

You might also consider this:

Cellular and/or satellite communication. This will help protect your rig no matter where it is.

Another option is if you have a security system nearby, add a wireless motion sensor and tie it into you buildings alarm system.

These are all deterents and nothing can stop a real pro. I do believe they reduce your rick. As stated above, make your insurance is kept up to date.

If you are interested in a motion sensor based system check out our ArrowTrack GPS tracking device. It will text or email you when the trailer is moved via it's built in motion sensor. Of course it does many other things such as locating you trailer if it is ever stolen and monitoring battery voltage along with many other things. We are also a sponsor of GD.com.

I have a shotgun rigged to my front door, my brother lost a ear borrowing it without telling me, he's very lucky.
I have since corrected the aim to account for the front steps!!!!

Anyone want to guess how much a front RV door costs!!!

Lol, just load it with bird shot. More likely to hit, and the bastards won't have any eyelids left... icon_biggrin.gif

I like the S Africa way of handling things:

http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/africa/9812/11/flame.thrower.car/

OP: you could always put a grab handle on the siding, and a handle on the door, then loop a chain through it (or through the stairs). Sure, it won't stop them, but it's just one more thing they'd have to deal with. Plus, unless it's being stored, it won't look horrible. During storage, who cares what it looks like?

There is a post over here where someone put a dead bolt on there side door.

If you look close at the key cylinders you will see there is a spring loaded wafer real close to the end and that is what holds it in the door handle.
All you need to do is over power that little wafer and it comes out. Once out you still need to insert a screwdriver in the hole and rotate the locking bolt to the unlocked position.

The best thing you could do is install a mobile home deadbolt like someone posted above.

"Mobile Home Deadbolt"

I was wondering how you could make a regular deadbolt work. Did a search for mobile home deadbolts and found a bunch.

Definately gonna add this to our trailer.

Thanks for the clue.

Just buy a deadbolt at Home Depot and install it yourself, like I did. Make sure it's keyed on both sides. About $30 at HD.

I went to an RV dealer and found this Deadbolt. It's going on tomorrow. icon_bouncy.gif
Eff the thieves copper.gif We did think about the shotgun idea...
