It's summertime and I'm bored. Looking at the pics, there must be more members than I thought that ride the south dunes. I'm gonna make it a personal goal to post more when I expect to be out there riding - always fun to meet new peeps!
I'll start. I'm DONE and I love the South Dunes. They are 30 minutes from my home and you can't beat that with a stick. Once the weather cools I have a group that goes almost every Thursday after work. FUN times out there, we rode in the rain, with the wind, it didn't matter beyond that we were riding. I occasionally head out for the weekends and meet some friends out there. Mostly stick to Gordon's though - I feel kinda cramped at Buttercup.
If you see me please do introduce yourself. I'm the redheaded chica on a YZ250F although I have also been known to hit a kiddie track on my 70 to pass time between rides

Now your turn.

Used to - then I found GD Storage. We migrated like a bird. Soon as they have Gordons Storage - might come back. Course the BLM will close Dune Buggy Flats in wet years - looking like I may stay north.

Effin tards if they do!

I'm really thankful for the southdunes and living so close. I wouldn't be half the rider I am without those Thursday night rides.

Patton Valley local here and you can find my group trying to get lost between Patton and Test Hill. My group is 50/50 on North or South and East or west for camping.

I ride Gordons, it's a 50/50 split between riding Glamis or Gordons.

I'll keep an eye out for ya shwinn - always fun to go on rides with more 2 wheelers! We usually do the same thing - leave camp to zip around the dunes, break @ one of the hills and dune back.

Gordons ripper here. YZ450f . Might change when the buggy is done though, we run out of dune pretty fast on the dirtbikes going from test to pattons. Although in the buggy we can rip up to Glamis and rip back if need be. Usually have about 6 bikes or so and a mob of couches behind us. Brawp!

I started in Gordons in 1980, rode to Glamis from Gordons in 1981 and I never went back to the south dunes again. I really need to go back to Gordons one more time.

I have it on my to-do to one day find out how I can ride from Gordons to Glamis. I just wanna see it all in one linear (or close to it) line.

One day I'll get the nerve to post up a topic for everyone's 'nicknames' for rides other than their own.

South Dunes TDay and New Years, then back up to Glamis for the rest of the year. We camp in Buttercup next to the same people we have camped next to for 12 years by Plank Road. For Kids, the dunes don't get any better, they can ride with us all day long, and riding down south teaches you that straight lining is boring, you have to turn to have have fun, don't need a destination, just keep turning and ripping. The kids riding with us are from 10-15 years old, they really can't keep up in the big dunes of Glamis, plus it is too rough for them.
Love both areas, but after 8-9 days down south, I am always itching for Glamis.

<<<<<<<never been to the south side, however I hear they are a little more family friendly than glamis. I'll probably try it this year at least once.

We usually split our time 60/40 gordans to glamis but even when we camp at gordans we end up screaming down sand highway to glamis almost every trip.
I like the camping allot more at gordans but you can’t beat the dunning at glamis. Camping in the washes is kinda like gordans but the washes are too dusty for me, it makes me get nasty allergies but as long as there's a light breeze at gordans and you camp far enough north the dust there doesn’t bother me.

We camp mostly at Gordon's and occasionally go to Glamis. I like the south dunes because they are more techincal. Glamis is like Daytona (anyone can just open it up and fly around the bigger bowls), Gordon's is like a road course (it takes some skill to to navigate at faster speeds). We do like to go to Glamis to watch the show sometimes.

Glamis/Gordons/Ocotillo Wells. Sometimes buttercup but its been years.
I've driven my supper duty from Gordons to Glamis a few times. Easy as h#ll. You get get on the sand highway that they do the drags and go right past the Pattons Hill right hand turn. It goes straight to the high rent district of Glamis! Not a bad ride, but watch your fuel. Depending on your speed, it doesnt take long at all.

I used to go to Buttercup all the time before they built the border fence, loved it. We would occasionally go to Gordon's as well.
Now we store at GDS, so Glamis only for us.

Yes you are correct. I guess I need to set up a fuel stop down there. That is a fuel burner of a run...about 13 gallons just to get to DD.

So keep in just under 90mph, like in what 3rd or 4th and the rpms down. That would be like 8 gallons?

Thanks.
I run primarily 4th but there is 3 spots to watch out for on the way down on the high side. I'm always 4,000 to 7,000 RPMS. Always safe to have power at your foot. On the way back I take the low side and stick with 4th and keep over 100MPH. And yes, we are always on the radios looking for hazards.

i need to try gordans. my only run there was a day trip and we ended up in glamis or the pound, then went for a ride till someone ran out of gas. then back to the pound then rid back to the truck at gordans. man i sure hope a lot of the closed area gets opened up so we have all the dunes to ride soon.

Going to the south dunes is like dating a fat chick...it's fun until your friends find out.

Used to go to Gordons all the time before the dune closures. The riding area is just to small now.

We used to camp at Ogliby for years Lena The run from the tower to the pole was one of the best ways to get the cob webs out. Then once you got to the pole it was up to the right to Soft Valley #2 and not see a soul the rest of the Holiday weekend. Now that area'a closed....... As far a Gordons never was a fan allways seemed to A. Get lost in the dust bowl trying to find camp & B. allways got stuck leaving.

I know I shouldn't be so optimistic...but I am hoping for a lifting of some of the closures and most importantly no closing of the flats

I dunno it's grown on me even if it is smaller. I like how technical parts of it are. I think it's less dusty and I see less flatbillers there so that's a plus in my book!

Gordons for me 95% of the time. Agree with N2DEEP, dunes are more technical IMO and more fun. Buttercup is awesome for quads, but not too much fun for a buggy.

We are gordons regulars by way of the RV park next to Duners Diner. When ya get old, that full hook up goes right with the little blue pill so thats where ya can find us. We take the buggy up to G to see friends and have some Tacos.

Actually I like gordons alot more then glamis.... depends on your crowd I guess. Have 2 hills to run.. hard to get lost at night... flats are 10x better than the glamis parade stretch to race. If you find the right spots the dunes are alot of fun.. some big some small. For me it's just a better fit.. I can dune to test.. race, dune to patton and run .. then still make it home on reserve.
P.S. still looking for new peeps to hang with since my old group turned out to be a bunch of wannabe drunks that would rather sit in camp for 8 hours then ride to somewhere and chill.

I take the teenagers to G Wells often and enjoy the open flats for camping. We go to ride - not party. The drags are just as fun as Glamis. We also go to Glamis on buggy trips, since the buggies tear up G Wells in a short time. I would say it is 50/50.

We've been pretty exclusive to Gordon's over the past few years... we prefer it to Glamis and Buttercup but when the kids get older and start to ride, we'll probably head down to Buttercup more often.

South Dunes here... Better camping IMO due to the wide open areas. Not as big for sure but we can still ride without any trouble. Been to both and enjoy the less crowded sites down south. Love the drags and the hill if you want to see crowds.
