I have a 87 Honda 250 R it has been bored 4 over FMF pipe and silencer, I cant remember witch reed valves I put in there but the bike runs good, strong and very reliable. I would like to make is faster with out spending that much money are there any recommendations.
DUNE
You can change the sprockets to change the gearing. you can use a K&N for more HP. and for something like 90 bucks you can install a 88-89 CDI box. these little mods will wake it up a little. But for real HP you need to get into the motor.
The Oldtimer
Do the K&N, and replace the stock head gasket ($25 bucks or so) with a cr head gasket. This will bump up the compression and you will feel the difference. WARNING...you may have to put washers on the stud between the head and the nut or the head will not seat properly.

A smaller counter-sprocket will make you quicker and more responsive but you will lose some top speed.

Thank you for the replies, but I have some questions.
1. The advantage of changing the CDI box and all the plus and minuses with that also the cost
2. With the K&N air filter should I use the stock air box or is there a special mounting process
3. What tooth count do you recommend for the counter-sprocket
Washroad
Get the K&N and an Outerwear (Outerwears are about $15 and well worth it)and loose the air box lid, just get rid of it. You're going to be letting in a lot more air. Now, you're also going to have to increase the main jet size in the carb when you do this. If you have a stock carb, .152 size main jet, get a .160 and start doing some plug checks until you get it jetted correctly.
I have run 12 tooth counter-shaft gears and it seems to wear out chains quickly. I then went to larger rear-sprockets, got the same results and the chain seems to last longer. Stock rear sprockets are 39 teeth, try a 42. Three rear teeth = 1 front tooth. Stick with steel, cheaper and last much longer than aluminum.
Try repacking your silencer. Believe it or not, a properly packed silencer will add horsepower over a empty silencer/no silencer.
Try gapping your plug smaller. Since stock R ignition is kinda weak, you make the spark jump a smaller gap and it fires better. Try gapping down to .022. It really works.
