i have a stock 2001 raptor going up dunes i have to down shift into 2nd its seems 3rd has no torque.do i change sprocket size
SANDSPANKER
Jerry Yes you change sizes. I also have a 2001 raptor I dropped one tooth in the front it helped a little then a few weeks later I added 4 teeth to the rear and it has the beast climbing hills in 2,3,4 and maybe 5th. When I changed the gearing I noticed that great power you feel in 1st? Its there in 2nd,3rd,4th,5th!!!!! Your top speed will suffer a little but when you can just roll on the gas to climb any hill in 2nd,or 3rd its worth it I think!!! Give it a try trust me you'll like it! Jerry do you like to wheely??? If so you've got to change your gearing! once it was changed I can pull the front end up with just the gas in 2nd,3rd,and 4th! 5th can be done with a little body english!!!!!!!!!!!!I hope you have FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I read an article about the three engineers that were in charge of designing the Raptor.

They said they geared the Raptor so tall to avoid quick wheelies.

They geared it way too tall.
The '02 is a bit better, but I still feel like you do that the Quad is too high geared.

I've read here of some simply dropping the front sprocket a tooth, with happy results then:
Others that changed the front and rear to end up with the same ratio, same performance.

Good question,, What are the best ratios???

You could drop the front two teeth and that would be the same as droping the front one and then adding 4 to the rear. If you drop the front two then you could use the same chain and save yourself $60 for the chain and $40 for the rear sproket and still be able to keep the sproket gaurd on. If you do not already have an O-Ring chain then get one of the DID X-Ring chains off ebay for $60 instead of $90. Hope this helps you out.
