I'm interested in putting an exhaust on my Raptor but had a phew questions. If I were to run the full header setup and silencer what jets should I go with? What primary header tube sizes is the aftermarket makers using? Does going to the full exhaust make much more of a diffrence then just the silencer on a stock raptor?

Jets will be trial an error, most pipes will have recomendations on to what size to use but you may have to go up or down. I would suggest spending the extra $100 and do the air filter and a performance jet/carb kit at the same time.

As far as the filter goes has anyone done any testing with an open eliment filter in comparison to the closed air box?

A while ago me & some friends were doing testing at Gordon's for Bill's Pipes. (trying different headpipe/silencer combinations) With the stock filter/box and the full system, those particular pipes ran best with 150 & 155 jets...certainly woke that thing up!
Waiting til' the sand show to pick up an air-filter conversion. (most likely gonna remove the box and run a k&n and adjust the jetting again) I think some people drill holes in the stock air box and run a drop in k&n too. Go to the Yamaha section on the board at
www.atvconnection.com and you'll find LOTS of info. laters

I have the full Yoshi system. I think the head pipe diameter is the same size as stock but the bends are much smoother. I have the ProFlow K&N w/outerwear kit that I run with the airbox lid off. I also installed the Dynojet kit which changes out the needles, springs, jets, etc. I am running the 150/155 dynojet jets, needles in the 4th position from the top and pilots 3 turns out. The 155 dynojet does not come in the kit. It has to ordered separately. The improvement from stock was incredible. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the info. One question for you though. Were do you normally ride. Does that setup work well for Glamis?

I normally ride in Glamis. I did not have this setup last season. The bike was completely stock. I have ridden a few times this summer in San Bernardino Mountains, and near my home in Riverside which is almost the same altitude as Glamis. The setup seems to work well. I am not worried about anything getting past the filter with the outerwear and the lid off. These are basically the same setup I had on my buggy.

Yoshimura makes the best four stroke pipes, not cheap though.

I have a yamaha gyrt tip on mine it work great
did not change the head pipes i want to keep the
bottom end power ,the larger the head pipes are the more top end you get but you lose some bottom
end power also the pro design air cleaner set up work good to the jet set up was pretty close from
pro design

Hey Addicted...sorry, I forgot the sizes of the headers we were testing. I do remember that I preferred the set-up with the largest diameters we had...I didn't seem to feel any power loss on the bottom-end but I had it opened up most of the time. The folks at Bill's Pipes still have my g/f's Raptor for dyno testing, etc. and have since made small changes (one of them was to switch to stainless steel).

Hey Stone, I thought about that cdi also but they wanted 300 bones for one. I heard its good for 3 horses. You didn't pay that much for yours did you?

Has anyone of you experienced any side effects from any Modification you've done?
Anything like hard starting, poor idle, flat spots in acceleration or at any speed, ect,, anything at all that was less than stock??
And who makes a quiet performance pipe???

Thanks guy's for all the information.
Now the reason for this topic was I am going to build my own exhaust. Header and muffler out of stainless steel with no packing inside the mufflers. I would really like to get my hands on and aftermarket exhaust to use for a day or so so I can flow test it to find out roughly how many cfms the muffler I will build should flow.

I RUN A POWERBOMB IV SERIES COMPLETE WITH HEADER AND IT RUNS GREAT!
I ALSO REMOVED THE AIR BOX AND PLACED A K&N ON EACH TUBE WITH OUTWEARS. I MADE BRACKETS TO HOLD THEM SNUG AND REMOVED THE OLD CLAMPS AND PUT A GOOD WIDE BAND CLAMP.
I HAD TO RUN 175/180 JETS @ GLAMIS, BUT HERE @ HOME THE ALTITUDE IS AROUND 5500 SO RUN 160/165.
I HAVE NEVER MOVED MY PINS. ITS STILL IN THE STOCK POSITION.

Thank you Raptor man! 175/180 seems a lot higher then waht most people are running. Is this because of the removal of the air box.

HEY SHROOM,
THAT ATV CONNECTION THING HAD A UNI HAULER THAT YOU COULD PUT 2 ATVS ON TOP OF YOUR SHORT BED TRUCK AND STILL HAVE ROOM UNDERNEATH FOR STORAGE.
THE KIT WAS $1200. NOT BAD IF YOUR NOT MECHANICALLY INCLINED A LIL BIT. HECK DO WHAT I DID. GET A 3/4 THICK PLYWOOD PLACE IT ON THE REAR OF YOUR TRUCK/BOLT IT DOWN AND PUT EYE LETS IN THE RIGHT PLACES AND USE 8' RAMPS AND DRIVE UM UP AND TIGHTEN THEM DOWN. I EVEN HAVE 2X4 BLOCKS MEASURED OUT TO WHERE MY WHEELS FIT BETWEEN THEM.
WORKS GREAT FOR HAULING 2 BIKES. COST? UNDER $50.
SAVINGS OF $1150, NOT BADD HUH.

Raptorman,
Sounds like a good way to haul 2 quads without having to tow...I'd definately use your way and save $1150 but I've got a shock hoop/cage in my bed and I can't even fit ONE quad back there! laters

If you want the hot setup then go with C.T.'s sonic. you get 32.6 hp at 4000rpm and peaks out at 48.6 at 7100rpm they cost 589.00 and with all pipe changes you need to rejet. with C.T. you would need to jet it at 170/175.
Dirtwheels did a exhaust shootout in there Feb. 2002 issue for the Raptor and C.T. hit the top with the most HP.

Yeah but CT was the only pipe dynoed with the lid off and the dynos were done on CT's dyno. Plus it looks like sh*t.

Well the rules were each pipe would be run on a dyno using the airbox mods and jetting specs that the companys recommended. and as far as looks go I think it looks pertty hot with the chrome on it. But they are heavy at over 11lbs.
Also C.T. provides the new main jets and needles with their pipes, also the K&N air filter and pro flow kit.
