I have been shopping around for a 440 kit and the 426 kit has been recommended to me instead. 426 is supposed to be more reliable. Any advice will be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I told her we could put my F3 motor in it.
The thing wheelies like a 750 and has full race Yosh system, jetted, does 160 MPH
down the front straight at WSIR.
For a 600 it's fast, in a quad going up olds it's untouchable. Banshee what???

some guys ive talked to suggested a high compression 416 with cam and head work, ignition and the other basics.

WHAT WERE THE REASONS THEY SUGGUSTED THE 426 OVER THE OTHER? JUST RELIABILTY? I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY MYSELF, SINCE I OWN A 400, AND EVENTUALLY ITS GONNA BLOW....I MEAN, IM TACO, I BLOW UP MY BIKES....ITS JUST THE WAY I AM.
ITS NOT ALWAYS JUST THE PISTON THAT DOES THE TRICK, ITS THE ODDS AND ENDS THAT MAKE THE POWER GAINS.

Hey TACO,
You and I should hook up, we can put all my good motors that I still have from all the bikes I've destroyed into yours.
Turn around and sell 'em. We could start a business.
Crashed and Taco'ed bikes for sale...
We promise they're good bikes...

I just had a 440 kit put in my 400ex and let me tell you it halls a$$ . I have raced 2 raptors up comp already and they have nothing over me. I beat them by 3 bike lengths every time. If you go with a 440 you have to get the cam too and harden rockers, heavy duty valve springs and clutch springs and since the top end is off you might as well port and polish you head. I had mine done for 1300 otd with labor. It really wakes up your bike and makes it even funer to ride.
jc - where did you have the work done? Also, how long did it take to turn it around? Did you take the who;e bike in or just the motor? How about exhaust, did you put a new pipe on it?

Hey Aleee, thought ju was gonna trade that EX for a Raptor? Is that the same EX you trashed?

well, the 416 i have read and heard is more reliable, but also the piston is lighter than a 440 piston, your gonna rev quicker with the smaller piston. it all depends how you combine parts in a thumper. you can put a big cam in and head work, but it aint gonna do much with out compression increase and timing. it really boils down to how much you are willing to spend, and with the ex, is that much to go the fastest on it really worth it? i am plannin on do some motor work to mine, but i aint paying a bunch to do it.

save your money and buy a new bike. It doesn't make that much of a difference!!

thats an option too, but my quad is paid for now, dont want another payment. so make do with what i got, if i want to really haul ass i hop on my crf450 anyway.

I do not think that 3 three bike lenghts over a stock reliable raptor is worth $1300 on a 400ex. Maybe you should look for another bike but, hey it is your hard earned money do what you want.

Well if you take that 1300 i spent on my motor and the 5000 i spent when i bought the bike it is still less than the cost of a raptor and it rides twice as good as a raptor. So beating a raptor by 3 bikes is awsome seeing i still have 220cc less than a raptor. oh and by the way the raptors i beat were all piped and rejeted with k&n's.

i took my bike to a local shop here in the imperial valley. it went to threat racing and the turn around was 6 weeks(i got scewed on turn around) but normal turn around should only be 2 weeks at the most. I did take the whole bike in. even though i had to wait 6 weeks it was still alittle hot to ride so it was kind of o.k.
here is a break down of cost
ims 440 kit =300
cam= 160
valve springs= 96
clutch springs= 15
thicker gasket= 14
oil filter= 7
rev kit= 109
maxima oil= 13
pilot jet= 3
main jet= 3
new spark plug= 2
pipe gaskets= 7
top end labor= 174
bore= 58
install sleeve= 75
harden rockers= 225
port/polish= 230
tax= 60
total = 1550
my discount for having to wait 6 weeks was 1300 otd
i already had the pipe, k&n and vented air box

I was told that the 440 kits keep blowing head gaskets and the sleeves and cylinders just aren't reliable. Motoworld is pushing the 426 or 416 kit before the 440. 3 of 5 places I called yesterday suggested the 416 or 426 with higher compression instead of the 440 for the same reasons. I think they may be on to something. I think I'm going with the 426. I want to spend the season riding my quad, not repairing it.
Javi, this is another 400ex. I rode a Raptor and I liked it for everything but duning.

The 440 will blow head gaskets if you have the compression higher than 11.1. keep it under that and you should be fine.
Thanks JC. It sounds like there are alot of "opinions" on this 440/426/416 issue. I've also followed the same arguments in other forums.
BTW - which pipe did you have?
I also looked at a new bike, but figured I'd be way behind the power curve doing that. I've already got the new A-Arms, new Shocks tires etc setup just the way I like it. I'm just looking for a bit more punch. I just don't see anything on the market worth their price tag. until I find it I'll just buy small (relative to setting up a new bike) upgrades to the EX and beer with the rest of the savings.......
Maybe one day the manufacturers will build a NEW quad, rather than repackaged old parts.....

BUY A C-DALE, MY BUDDY JUST BOUGHT ONE, AND IT FRICKIN HAULS BUTT, IVE NEVER BEEN ON A FOUR STROKE WITH THAT TYPE OF POWER BAND, IT BUILDS ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP, WHERE IT REVS OUT AT 10600 RPM, THATS MORE THAN MY BANSHEE, PLUS HE IS GOIN TO GET IT REPROGRAMED FOR FREE TO REV OUT TO 11600RPM, I JUST MAY HAVE TO TRADE IN THE BANSHEE FOR SOME AMERICAN MADE HP!!
OH IF U DONT GET A C-DALE, GOOD LUCK WITH THE BIG BORE KIT.
i RACED A 440EX WITH MY DADS RAPTOR WHICH ONLY HAS A DMC SLIP ON, AND WE STAYED EVEN UP OLDS
Ya the C-Dales are sweet, and they are proud of them $$$. I was out at Quad Central in Vegas. They do some pretty sweet stuff to the dales. I like the dynamic programming abilities. Steve (owner of QC I believe) was explaining the mods they do. If your ever in the area of the Vegas speedway you should stop in and check them out. Its a smaller shop, but worth the visit. Beware, they will talk your ears off....

i beleive the biggest gain would be from going from the stock compression to 11 to 1 or higher. you have to run race gas, but 4 stroke, wont go through it that fast.
