I have a 1986 honda 250r, and I was wondering what a cdi unit would exactly do to my bike. How do they work?
DUNE
You have one in your bike now. It's a little black box about 4"long x 2" wide, it's you Ignition system. You can find it by removing the front plastic on the quad, and it's just under the headlight attached to the frame with a rubber mount.

You may want to update it with a 88 CDI unit.

I think he's asking what an 88 CDI unit will do for him.

Sorry Scott, we did get a little side tracked there. It happens to some of us easily. I don't know what advantages an 88 CDI has over the 86, but there are other companies that make these little aftermarket black boxes too.
A CDI recieves a signal from your pickup coils, telling where the pistons are in the stroke. The CDI tells the coils when to fire. Aftermarket or even an 88 on an 86 might advance or retard the timing (when the coil actually gives a spark depending on where the piston is). That's about the only function of the CDI unit until newer bikes started coming out with fuel injection. But thats another story. Basically, they make your bike run better, generally more horsepower.
I'm no expert, but that's my 3 pennies.

So besides the fact that we all can't spell. Are you guys recommending that I make the change or not? Will the pros out weigh the cons?
DUNE
It was recommended to me by C.T. racing to do the swap and I did notice a change for the better.

What kind of CDI unit are you using in your bike?
DUNE
I run a Honda 88-89 4trax250r CDI. It gives a hotter spark and improved performance. If you are into racing then I would go with the LRD unit...

Are they easy to change? [Eek!] or [Roll Eyes]
DUNE
Just take off your front fenders and locate the CDI unit. Its a little black box that is held on to the frame by a rubber sleeve. unplug it and remove it from the sleeve. replace with a new one plug it in and put everything back together. That's it.
scottcalvin
Dang that is pretty easy. I looked at it today and now I understand. thanks a ton. [Big Grin]

Im a little slow to getting around to these things. I have never had a problem with my bike and I liked everything about it. But now its time to make this thing a little faster. Hey Im a young guy, and two years new to this. But its the best. [Big Grin]
scottcalvin
Set the points on? Like I said Im new. [Confused]

Are you sure. I think .032 is a little wide for the 250. I think those are supposed to be set at .030. [Big Grin]

Will you guys stop jacken with the guy. Just leave them at .035 or you stand a chance at burning out your muffler bearings. [Roll Eyes]
treshombre
Well as long as you change the oil filter often I don't believe that should be a problem.

Although I have found that changing out the stale air in the tires does make a diference in the big dunes. [Big Grin]

The anti-vibration jelly in the handlebars needs to be checked also. Set points at .33
scottcalvin
Are you talking about the spark plug gap?
Chummin
You guys are jerks!!! Don't listen to them..

Points is just another term for Teeth on your sprocket.

Hey, when you change that box out, you might want to re-align the hook-latch system under your tank with the air-box again. Couple of zip ties should do the trick.

Hope that helps.. [Big Grin]
Shane-0
Air box?? You still have that?? Get rid of all that and run a piece of screen door mesh duct taped to the carb.
dunernr
does that really work? The window screen and duct tape... I know what I'm doin' this weekend! [Spin]

I really know a lot more than I act like now...Ive been reading up on my stuff. I just wanted to see how would lie to me....thanks a lot guys. [Angry Fire]

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves

Those are all tricks to make sandrails faster. [Roll Eyes]
Texas Duner
when the sand crytalizes in the cylinders it really make you go fast almost like a shot of NOS
Shane-0
NOS. That little acronym never ceases to amaze me. Its funny how a brand name can become what the whole thing is called. Like Kleenex(facial tissues) or Saran wrap(plastic cling wrap).
