i hate to tell ya this...but thats not gonna happen! a few simple mods to the YFZ and the thing is a monster. you may beat a stock one with a bad rider on it ...but thats about all you can do! you could go with the full yoshi stroker upgrade...but cost wise.......
my mods:
k&N w/alba adaptor, rejeted stock carb, DRZ-E base gasket, HotCams intake, White Bros. R4 full system.
TCS shocks, Scotts stablizer, TAG T2 bars, LoneStar rear axle, Kenda Klaws on .190 Douglas's, Suz nerfs, (scat track V paddle for sand), PRM skids, and i cant remember what else!

oh yea rivermobeter I forgot to include the yamaha yfz both yamaha and honda 450 are good powerful bikes out of the box and you will have to dump a lot of money in any suz or kaw to even touch either the yamaha or honda 450 out of the box both are good choices.Oh yea enjoy your trip to coos bay in july I was just there for ten days over the holiday.I bought my honda trx 450r while on vacation man does it climb and the power I think I'm only adding the power up kit to itand leaving the stock pipe alone.I saw a lot of people getting tickets for being over 93 db over the holiday.Be safe and enjoy

I agree that the 450s are better out of the box, but ya can still beat them on track or dunes or a drag, as long a there is a expierenced rider on it, like effinbees77 beet 2 yamaha 450s in a race a lake elsinore mx and he rides a 03' Z with alba stage 3 kit, gearing, lt suspension up front and tcs rear rebuild, and other little stuff and he smoked them off the line and lead the whole race,

Doug Gust is kicking some major a!! in the pro proudouction class on his z yes that motor has potential Doug is also my age and very strong but still you will have to dump thousands of dollars to keep up with the 450 you are right rider ability has a lot to do with it My friend lined up with raptors with his z and was not beet by no more than a half of bike link every time. No doubt the z-400 is a great bike and is fun to ride

thanks ODR...i cant wait to get back up to oregon!!!!!!!! u gonna come by and say hi?
shocker....tech lesson here:
HP is a calculation. TOUQUE is a measurement. The raptor has so much more torque than the Z its not even funny!!!
how does this translate in the real world?
i can smoke a stock raptor in a drag race
i will be smoked by that same raptor on a hill climb!
back to the topic at hand: ODR is absolutely correct in all that he has said. if you want to keep up with the 450...either get out your wallet ...or...go buy a 450!
but just for clairfatacton...to the original question...where are your tryin to keep up with these guys? sand hills? mx track? trails? drag race?

So, i didnt say anything about torque, i sad that the raptors dont have much power or top end over the Z, i didnt say the Z had more torque, and the raptors are faster, stock to stock the raptor is faster, but thx for the lesson that i didnt need

If you are on a track, any one of those bikes can win. You never get into the high gears, for top speed. If you do the baja's or even endero races the 450's will smoke, because the 400's will never stay with the 450's 5 gear. Just my 2 cents.

That's what I said, on a track anybody can win. It's the open desert that 450's have the advantage.

Thanks for all the kind words but, don't go talkin' me up too much or people might expect me to actually go fast out on the track! Unfortunately the big motor for the Z did have to get put on hold for a little while since I blew up the 250R (crank, rod and everything else above it). Still, the big Z motor will happen. Most likely a Big Bore Stroker. I have no desire to buy a new quad anytime soon. I'm a BIG fan of the Z but I do know the 450's tear 'em apart in HP, stock for stock. Modded vs. Modded, it's a bit closer. Those on the National Circuit usually claim that Gust & his Yoshi 450'd Z has the most HP out there and that's including the Yami's & Honda's and they aren't stock either!
03Zrider - (it's expensive but) Big Bore Stroker + Porting + FCR Carb + Ignition =
outrun those damn yamaha's!!!! July 3rd - Quad Racing at Elsinore. PM Shocker for more info.

I'm not sure if I "could" but I'd rather race my own Z. I just want to put some laps in on the 470 to see how it runs.
