Full Version: Living "out In The Country"

I have always lived “out in the country” and that being the case we have had more animals dumped off around us than I can remember. Thru the years we have had about every kind of medium and large size bred of dog, as well as cats of every stripe. Most of the time we never see who dumps them we just find them around our house looking for something to eat. I have no use for a person that turns a domesticated animal out and abandons them. Often times in our part of the country domesticated animals that get dumped will be attacked and killed by coyotes if they have no shelter they can find at night. Most times the animals are well groomed indicating their former owners had spent some money on them which indicates an animal that was intentionally purchased as a pet. I believe once the newness wears off and the owner has to clean up one to many messes from them they decide they can no longer be inconvenienced so they drive “out in the country” and dump them.

A few weeks ago I was sitting on the front porch talking on the phone in the dark with no lights on. It is pitch black around my house at night if the moon is not full and this night the moon was no where to be seen. I see a car approaching from the south and that seems unusual because there is just never much traffic on our road after 6-7 pm and now its like 10 pm. As I watch it I can tell it is slowing down like it will stop or maybe turn into my driveway. I got all excited because I first thought being a small car that it was going to be some teenagers bashing in mail boxes. This would be great to see because although the outward appearance of my mailbox is completely normal it is actually made of 1/2 and 5/8 think steel, however that was not their intention. As they come to a stop I see the passenger door open and a small image can be seen in the illumination from the dome light. Then I realize they just threw and animal out. I was immediately enraged. I screamed at the top of my voice as they closed the door “get your ass back here” but the drove off. I thought about jumping in the front door and grabbing the .22 henry mini bolt that I keep with bird shot and shooting their car but I know before I can they will be out of range so I make the split second decision to jump in my truck and run them down. Keep in mind no one in my house knows what is going on. I run through the house to the garage and jump in my truck. My son hears the door open and so he looks out his window to see me slide out of the driveway to chase after them. Well I catch them just up the street and flash my bright lights but they won’t stop. They then turned down the next road to the left but they don’t speed up much so I went around them and cut them off making them stop. As I get out the passenger opens the door and I can see its two women at which point I dropped my “tire knocker” back behind the seat and go approach the passenger. As I get up to her she starts to talk and I cut her off and tell her I don’t want to hear what she has to say but she needs to listen to what I have to say. I told her to tell me that they will not buy another animal to have as a pet again since they obviously can't take care of them and that I am sick of people like her who buy animals only to dump them a few weeks later. I explained to her to do everyone including the dumped animal a favor and have the decency to take them to the pound, and tell her about all the coyotes that we have that love to eat little domesticated animals. She finally begins to apologize and tell me they have seen my kids out playing many times and thought they would like to have it. I told her she could have had the decency to knock on my front door and ask. She then offers to come back to the house and get it. I tell her no and that I will take care of it myself.

As I pull back in the driveway I see my two oldest boys out in the yard with flash lights looking around. As I get out of the truck they ask me if I saw any kittens running around when I pulled in. I say no why and they tell me that my youngest son who saw me slide out of the driveway told my wife that he thought I ran off in the ditch so she came outside after I left and found a kitten that came up to her wanting to be picked up and they were looking to see if there was any others. Keep in mind no one knows what had just happened to me. I tell the boys to quit looking because there was only one and I saw it get thrown out. By the time I walk in the house said kitten is eating from the cat food bowl. I told my wife I guess the dumpers dumped that cat at the right place. Now we have stray cat number 5 at our house. Its the first male we have (and hopefully the last) so I named him Thomas.
He is a beautiful cat but this is not a real good picture;

Yea iffen people. I have lived in the boon dock's for 28 years and have had as many dog's and cats dumped on me over the years I've lived out here. My vet bill's over the years has reached into the thousand's of dollars for taken care of some one else's animals. Moved out here with two dogs and have never had to buy a dog or cat since. Raised ever one that has come to me as they were mine. Picked up as many that never made it to the house and buried them because some ding bat running ninety miles and hour down a dirt road ran over them.

My mom lives in a rural part of Texas and people around her do this all the time. That is how she got her two donkeys and one of her horses. She also got a yellow lab that way. She eventually finds the owners and it always has the same story. I can't afford to take care of them, so I just let them go. The donkey she got was a pregnant female and that is how she ended up with two. My mom grows hay in her front yard (the big rolled stuff) and hungry hay eating animals go there to feed. The cat looks like a Russian Blue. Cute little thing.

WOW, how the hell does a person dump a pregnant donkey off?

Glad there are guys like you guys that don't turn a shoulder on these abandoned pets. Hats off to you guys.

Good friend of mine also lives in the boonies. He also takes in dogs when he can he will also give them away to people he knows will take care of them or call the pound to come and get them......
He found one dog who he now regrets giving away.

If it wasn't for animals, I'm not sure I would survive, my 2 cats came from the pound. I look at them often and wonder how in the heck they ended up in the pound. I always make a donation to the pound every year.

Yep....that cat is a pretty little Russian Blue! So glad you are giving it a good home! smile.gif

I have had several pound kitties....my favorite cat that I have now is the best cat I've ever had....I adopted him when he was 6 months old. Someone made a huge mistake in letting him go - but now I am reaping the benefits. Karma at work..... smile.gif

Good for you. Some people's lack of compassion underwhelms me.

That looks just like my Shadow.

i hear ya bro, i dont understand how they can do what they do. i grew up out of town spending most of my childhood and teen years on my grandpas dairy. cats and dogs always being dumped off there. most of the cats worked out as great mousers, but the dogs didnt stick around. if someone in the family or friends couldnt take em, animal control picked em up, or unfortunately since the dairy was about a mile from a busy state hwy, theyd get hit by passing cars. dogs are much more freaked when they are dumped in unfamiliar surroundings than cats are

btw, thats a beautiful kitty you have there

grew up in the country, the most loyal, loving dogs we ever had were strays that adopted us or ones we saved from drowning in the canals.

my whiskey was a dumped animal I adopted. she is my best friend and the best dog i've ever had. I cannot imagine why anyone would dump her. she is one of the number one joys in my life, I am so glad she found me, because my life would be boring without her.

thumb.gif That cat looks very content to be at a new home! It sucks, but glad you can be there for it.

clap.gif yay.gif Oh that whole story just makes me soooo happy. I sure hope you got through to the ladies in the car. People who dump animals are SELFISH, and IRRESPONSIBLE period!!!!!! Kudos for you and your family!

I always knew you were a big softie! laughing.gif

I too wouldn't be able to turn my back on any animal in need. I absolutely detest anyone who would dump a poor defenseless family member like that, my pets are my children and I spoil them as such. I also cannot stand people who recklessly breed animals just for profit. They don't love their pets, they just want to make more money off of them.

I wasn't talking about shooting "some one", I was talking about peppering their car. .22 birdshot wouldn't even break the glass at 50 feet.

A .22 with bird shot would only make a noise nothing more, just enough to put some fear in some one preventing them from doing this again.

I can't remember all the times we have spent money patching dumped animals back up at the vets because they ended up on our porches with part of their guts hanging out.

Heres one, this is Moe. She showed up inside our fence after some coyotes or a pack of dogs tore her up after someone dumped her at night. I spent about $1500 putting her back together, so yeah I guess I get a little passionate about this sort of thing due to my experience. She's just one of many.

I have no trouble killing an animal IF it NEEDS to be done , but if an animal suffers because the owner is either to lazy or uncaring then I got no problem inflicting a little "discomfort" on them.

Those sick individuals make me want too...... I'll leave that part out. But I do want to say thanks for caring and saving those animals that all of you pick up. Sometimes like many say animals cannot help themselves.
