I’m heeding out to Vegas after X-mas and was thinking of stopping at Dumont for a couple of days. I have never been there and was wondering if any one had any advice on a spot to camp, or things to check out?
Thanks

We like it out there. A little more low key than Glamis. Make sure you get your pass and you will be fine. We park along the bluffs above the ranger station. The dunes are smaller in lingth but make up for it in size. We always have a good time. Good place for the family.
Have fun

Regardless of where you set up camp, you'll have an AWESOME time...

Hopefully the dirt road leading in has been graded or it will be a slow slow drive in. That is the ONLY bad thing about dumont. If you don't have 4x4 once you climb the hill past the gate the sooner you find a spot the better, closer to the end of the road the sand gets soft in places.

Meh, he'll be alright if he doesn't have a 4x4....I've never seen anyone get stuck (other than a moho going past the first finger). It's pretty much hardpack and with these rains, he'll be nice for the next few weeks/months.

I doubt he will have a problem either just a heads up. I have taken a Moho out there dozens of times and only had one problem and that was my fault.

As you get close to the dunes, you will come across several "fingers" on your right. These fingers of sand lead into the main dunes. I like to stay on the south side of the fingers as it is firmer sand but there are pockets of soft sand in some of these areas. Just keep an eye out. I usually park somewhere on the south side of the second finger. Remember to park a little ways away from the finger as they get alot of traffic and there are frequently people coming up and over them. When camped, you can ride directly to the big dunes or follow the fingers in.

If you air down the tires you will be fine, being a resident of Dumont (happiest place on earth) every hill is a razor back, there are very few rollers, you must make it to the North Pole for a pic, on Dumontduneriders.com is maps for all the area if you air down you can camp any were you want, I have towed a 40' WW with 2wd Ford for years, got stuck, let the air out and away we go.
You can gets passes in Baker, if you are coming from Vegas DO NOT TAKE THE I-15 it is 2 times the distance, take the 160 to the Tecopa turn off, That ways is only 85 miles from Vegas, the 15 is 140 miles. if you go into Pahrump it is only 15 miles longer, then you can get fuel food and water.
Have fun!

In this pic, I am standing on the second finger and past my camp, you can see the third finger then the big dunes. The V between the big dunes takes you to "The Wall", what is now coming to be known as comp hill at the end on the right.

It's a bit soft close to the dunes, but the whole camp area is pretty hard pack. There are no bad spots to camp. It all depends on how close you like to be near the dunes. I like camping along the finger dunes to the right when you pull in.

Things to check out...
1) north pole- you'll find it soon enough as you dune north east
2) sperry wash- if you have some knobbies for you toys
3) south pole- south of comp hill. (Just a spot to chill and enjoy the view)
4) all the regular duning spots of course: comp hill, Banshee Hill (sometimes you'll find hill some shooters racing there), Taladega (just a real big oval track bowl where you can open it up nice and fast).
You'll love the lines at Dumont. Nice fast, and smooth flowing.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have 4WD and have been going to Glamis my whole life, so I know the routine with soft sand. I am coming from San Diego and going to load up the Rhino and see what Dumont is all about for a couple of days. The only problem is I am going by myself.
Thanks for all the info.

when you leave Dumont, go into Pharump or the Tecopa turn off, when leaving you will make a Right go over the hill about 8 miles down the hill 8 miles and the turn off to Tecopa is on your right, you can wash the tanks there and then the road only goes to Vegas, should be about 85 miles. I would rather not ever go to the dunes again than drive the Baker way.

You'll be just fine, roads are in good shape.
A friend drives his 2wd toyota with atv in the back all the way to banshee hill, never gets stuck.
