I'll look it up today and get back to ya Doc.
I remember that the billet replacements are just under $800 parts only. Plus Labor.

The Yamaha improved parts are far far cheaper.

No problems I've heard of from '02 and 03 owners so he may want to consider Factory parts.

I feel bad for '01 owners.

The Honda 300ex has the same problem but unlike Yamaha, Honda picked up the tab.

OHH.... I REMEMBER THAT IN A DIRTWHEELS WRITE-UP....ILL LOOK THAT ONE UP..

Fortin gears is making the replacement gears. I lost third gear. A chunck the size of an eraser broke off the casting on third gear. It wasn't the "DOG" on the side of the gear. The piece rolled around in my tranny stripping the nylon gears off the back of the clutch basket($245) and nylon gear on the oil pump ($10). Go to www.bluetraxx.com Lots of info and phone numbers there to get a hold of Yamaha. Never ever admit abuse or guilt and that your concerned of future sales you might have w/ Yamaha. BE NICE!!! Jim Moore is who you want to talk to at Yamaha USA. Be nice and professional and they might hook you up. They will tell you it's rider error. Tell them that Yamaha won't see any of my money in the future EVER if they can't pay for some of it...Z400's aren't losing trannys. BE NICE!!!! I pulled the motor and my Dealer charged me 3.5 hrs labor for teardown and reassembly at 60 bucks an hr. You will need new shift forks and any gear that touches 3rd gear, gaskets and other things. Mine was about 700 in parts paid by Yamaha. I paid for labor and pulled my motor. I own a quad that is now 100% backed by the company and made in the USA now. No excuses from Cannondale just SUPERIOR service and commitment.. [Beer]

To use 02 gears you have to use athe 02 case. I will check into the billet part. I just remember someone posting a company name on this board looked through all the old posts didn't find it.

The lastest word is don't use reverse.. Reverse is part of the culprit...Yamaha would not give me 02 gears. You can use 02 gears if you change every gear out...No problems w/ 02 gears. Rememeber though Yamaha says there is no problem w/ 01 gears. They changed the spacing for 02, but that is they're way of covering up the 01 problems. Why did they go to four "DOGS" on second gear then instead of three on the 01's??,,, cause they know there is a problem that's why.. A recall will only be done if people get hurt when their tranny locks up and they go over the bars. Recalls are done for the safety to us. No injuries no recall.....I have read of 5 people going over the bars when their tranny locked up. Cannondale had 5 Arvin front shocks break in half. They did a recall and free shock replacement was the answer. Are you listening YETTTTTTTTTTTTTT Yamaha!!!!!!

Good quality posts on this subject. The 02 gears are cost effective and have the dogs in proper order. Some 01's never have an issue period and when mine were taken out they looked a little worn but fine (upgraded to cryo treated 02's). Fortin, if I remember correctly does not make an entire set of gears and there were some fitment issues as well.

If Yamaha will help you with the bill, just have them do the 02 upgrade (no case change needed) and if they say there is no difference between 01 and 02, then just smile and say, I am making the change for the gearing benefits [Smile]

Was that Dirtwheels Mag?? I've been thumbing through ATV sport. I do remember the article saying they were about 800 bones.

3 hrs labor at $60 per is a pretty good deal considering all the work. A good price indeed!!
I figure as long as the engine/tranny is apart, may as well go the full route and modernize (bad choice of words huh! Modernize a '01) the whole thing.

I run my '02 very hard and alls well.

When dealing with outfits like Yamaha,, remember the old saying; "Loose your head, your Ass will soon follow".

OR in other words:

They be a bunch of hard-ons,, but you still have to deal with them civilly.
