I have found a 2 seater car I like but it only has a 1915 in it. It does have IRS and mid travel suspension. What do you experts think?

I ran Glamis for years in a Hi-Jumper 4 seater and a 1600. You just don't go straight up the dunes, you have to work your way around. I still went any place I wanted to go. Very similiar to driving my Ranger now.
spize909
I have a 2175 in my car and it is more then enough.
Do you know more about the engine? Build sheet, carbs, etc.
What kind of car is it. Is it a big heavy frame? I'm assuming 2-seater, right?
I would think if it's a light frame it'd be plenty, doesn't take much to get out and dune. You can go through the big stuff with a 1600 if you know how to drive.......

My dad's rail has been blasting Glamis for +20 on a 1835, Chenwoth 4 seater....its more technical and fun then powering up every hill with a v8.
SandTrap
You will be fine with that engine....

My uncle has a 4 seat toyz 4 big boyz car with a 1914 and he does fine just have to drive the car a little. If you need a lesson driving a VW Car Ask (WASH WIFE) Amy That girl can drive the piss out of her VW car.

I'll go anywhere with my 1915.

If it has close ratio gearbox it will be plenty good.I had a 1914 in my old hi jumper it got me around everywhere in glamis.I used the same motor for my 4 seater and it was slower but still got the job done.A lil headwork and it made the motor in the 4 seater feel like the motor did in the 2 seater car.

Now have a 2275 and its a good on power esp in the low end.

Thanks Rene! That put a smile on mommas face! I was just taking a break from getting her ready for next weekend. Here's her little hot rod getting ready for a bath after clean oil, valve adjustment and some fresh K&N's. I love this time of year, get to tinker on all my German chit!

Tell us more! 1915 is a bitchen little engine. It's nothin' to get a 100hp out of them and they run FOREVER! What frame is it?
Fireman
That ain't no joke! Amy and Kim can both dune those little hot rods!!!! I remember meeting up at the hill with you guys and like 10 or 12 V8, honda's and subie cars then the two VW cars and I said to my self man this is going to be a slow run!! WOW did I eat my words those ladys can drive and go ANYWHERE the LT V8 cars can go!!!
Good times for sure

A light weight buggy with a 1914 is like driving a quad. You can go anywhere. There are a lot of places you don't see 3000lbs LT rails unless the driver has had some seat time, and you can keep up anywhere unless it's a chopped up weekend and you're out in the easy bowls between olds/comp and gecko
spize909
So where are the pix of your new buggy!!? sraptor.gif

Some of the most fun runs I have been on have been behind a little VW no travel! Just cruising along, no hurries, checking out the scenery... No need to haul the mail, balls out all the time...

Do it!

1915 should push a 2 seater along nicely. Post up pics and specs.

Found this sand sprite,

ENGINE : vw 2013 dual port 92mm bore x 76.13 stroke ( just rebuilt has 2 hours hours on it in gordons well to begin break in see pics) ,dual 44 Idf weber carbs ,all new elring seals and gaskets ,grant rings , engle cam , forged crank , remote oil cooler with fan , remote oil filter , remote oil breather , motorola 55 amp alternator , all chrome tins , new fuel filter , new plugs , new rotor , new distributor cap , new 8mm plug wires , new ignition module , new fuel pump , new pushrod tubes , new pushrods , new pistons , valve job , dual valve springs , valve lash is set at .005 nice and loose and easy for maintenance . All sand sealed ,starts right up and runs great , not even broken in yet.

TRANSAXLE : Built sandmaster transaxle ( started life as a type II 3 rib bus transaxle ) has close ratio 1st - 4th gears , steel 1st - 4th forks , notched 1st - 4th sliders , welded 3rd & 4th syncro hubs , 4:86 ring and pinion , type 2 axles , hydraulic clutch slave cylinder ( not cable ) ,short throw hurst style empi t-handle shifter.

SUSPENSION : has rear 3x3 trailing arms , 24" fox bypass shocks with remote reservoirs , front has jamar aluminum torsion beams and custom shock hoops fabricated on the chasis with bilstein 7100 series external reservoir shocks ,cnc pedal assembly ( all hydraulic I even have a gas pedal for it that can be hydraulic but am running cable right now) , rear jamar disc brakes with dual piston calipers , jamar cutting brakes .

CHASIS : original 2+2 (very small rear ) but has no rear seats so it's a nice long wheelbase 2 seater,.kirkey series 20 high back bucket seats (drivers side is adjustable), crow 5 point harnesses ,all aluminum jeweled floor , autometer 5" monster tach , autometer oil pressure gauge ,autometer volts gauge , custom fabricated hard top and sun visor , two 7" hid lights ( brand new ) , two flood lights between shock hoops, brand new battery , quick release billet steering wheel , 10 gallon fuel cell . All tires are in good condition.

Entire rail has just been been rebuilt ( engine , transaxle , new wiring , new paint , new custom fabrication ). ground up restoration .

The motor sounds good by what is listed. But ask if it has been machined recently specifically line bored(if so ask who did the work),if so what was it cut too.Reason i ask is because it is very easy to destroy a vw case from being really worn out and some will just slap new bearings in there as a band aid and once you find out you can be looking at 450 minimum for a good case to start with.

Since it is a stroker motor it will most likely have a decent crank in it.Valve lash set at .005 tells me they are alm pushrods which are fine but will limit your rpm and may not not hold up to dual valve springs at higher rpm 5500 and up.If they are heavy duty alm pushrods then disregard. If chromoly they get set at loose zero lash.(tighter than .005).Are heads ported if not wont pull too good after 5500 anyways but will be strong to 5000.

Trans sounds like it has been upgraded to 5 rib 002 specs(4.86 ring and pinion)which is stronger than the stock 3 rib 5.37 ring and pinion.close ration 1-2 stock gears are low enough.Close 3-4 sounds good.

Chasis i had a hi jumper 2+2 and they are small and light suspension sounds good for the car and make a great duner. Mine moved well with the 1914 with non ported 40x35 heads. It had dual 44s,110 cam and got around everywhere in glamis just lacked decent suspension was a swing axle and stock length shocks.I used this motor for my 4 seater but had the heads ported soon after. This really helped

Sounds like a nice car. I saw that on Craig's list and actually emailed the guy out of curiosity because I was unaware that they even offered the SS IV with a 2+2 option.......didn't know they offered an IRS option on that frame either.
I love mine and that thing has way more suspension!
desertbound
They didn't offer the sand sprite IV in anything but a 2 seat mid engine. It's probably a sand sprite V. Either way, great setup.

BTW, I'll be at gordons superbowl weekwnd with a bunch of std travel 1915 cars if you wanna see how we get it through the dunes.
spize909
the guy emailed me back and said it was a 2000 SS IV with the 2+2 option.
I have a stack of Sand Sports Mags that date back to '96 and most have the Prowler's ad on the back of the front page and nowhere do they say there is an option for the 2+2 on the IV or any of the others for that matter.
The V is the only one listed with an IRS option so I bet you're right. It must be a V.

Well not a rail but back in the late 80s me and my brother built an 1835 for a bug that used to beat 5.0s.
