The clutch on my 86 250r is going out and i wanted to get some opinions on which clutch to go with. The motor has some work done to it. I have heard that the best way to go is with stock plates and cr500 springs. has any one heard of this? thanks for your help in advance.

have you had clutch problem. If not then just go with stock. Why waste the money on hotrod items if stock works for you...If you fill the need for stronger springs then go with the cr500's. But remember with stronger spring you get a harder pull at the lever...

Mr. Dune is right on about the springs. Stick with stock 250R parts. If you want to beef up, go with the Hinson basket. I run a CT350 and all is stock with the exception of the Hinson basket. I've raced motocross and never had an issue.

hey guys just wanted to let you know that the cr500 springs are SOFTER then the trx250r springs....

there softer because the cr500 uses 6 springs to make it stiffer.

the barnett springs are stiffer though.

for a 250r there is no need to use stiffer springs even on a big bore...

a hinson basket is good but all baskets wear out.

as soon as you get past the special coating on the hinson it will wear. It will wear slower then a stock basket but none the less it will wear out.

the only reason you need to replace your stock basket is if there are ridges in the basket. other wise, ride it till the rideges are very noticeable.

hehe you should see my old basket..... deep ridges....

always use the stock fiber, there the best.

best thing you could spend your money on is the 89 update kit for your motor.....

I believe the 86 motor uses the same clutch lifter rod(almost posisitve) but the lifter it self is different and uses a needle bearing and a thin washer, also you need a different pressure plate for this set up.

I recently changed mine.

I think you can find a complete kit called the 89 clutch update kit at www.cal-atv.com

or, order the parts that I talked about.

My setup on My 86 250R,
Barnett clutch kit, plates discs and springs, the Barnett springs were a full coil longer than the stock springs, and yes My left forearm got serious pump the first ride on the new clutch. I also ran a stock basket. For the money it's the way to go, the Barnett clutch kit was only a few bucks more expensive that OEM so for the money, my setup ruled, never had any problems.
I've also heard of people useing the above mentioned setups, I've heard they work well too. It all boils down to how much jack you wanna dish out.

What ever you go with just make sure you soak the plates and discs in oil for about 24 hrs before you install them.
