Full Version: What Do Cv Axle Clicks Sound Like?

When CV's start to go out do they start clicking? Also do they click all the time or only when you have your foot on the gas? I have something clicking when I am accelerating and stops when I push in the clutch. It also gets worse the more I push the pedal. Ideas?

could also be berrings in the hubs full of sand/dirt

sounds like you have trans or clutch issues. CV's or hubs will make noise all the time when the car is in motion.

When my cv's clicked it was most audible when just creeping along in 1st gear maybe 5-10mph, have they been repacked with grease anytime receently? How many trips on them? Have you measured the angle of your axles, and do you have limiting straps to prevent binding at full droop? If they are going out or need some serious greasing they will click all the time, clutch in or out. That leads me to think it may be something in your tranny, when my main shaft bearing was going out it made noise upon take off and acceleration, but the sound stopped when I pushed in the clutch. Hope this was a little helpful, good luck either way. Hopefully it won't blow out your sand season driving.

I guess ill throw in my two cents...

My CV's clicked only when i had a load on them ( foot on gas) ... as soon as I went clutch in and would coast they would not click at all. Kind of wierd.

I took all the preload out of my springs and let my car squat a little more and the clicking completly disapeard ( until i go over a razer back or something and the rear suspension completely opens up.

As far as what it sound it like... well.. my car is small and it was only the outter CV's making noise ...and i could litterally hear little metallic clacking noises coming directly from the wheel it self.. left AND right... the clicking would speed up and slow down porportionatly with wheel speed.

Not CV's.... sounds like throw out bearing to me...

I thought it was the trow out bearing at first also, but with the motor running and clutch out everything it normal. It only clicks when I and under a load, it was also my first pass up the road after my motor conversion. I changed from a Vw to a 3.5 honda. I never heard it clicking like this with the old motor but I never drove it up the road either. Hope it is not the tranny. I think I will repack the cv's and see what happens, also check the axel angle and make sure I don't need to tighten my limit straps. thanks for the input.

So I am almost positive I found the issue was the clocking of the CV's. I Just bought the car, swapped the motor, and gave it a shot down the road. It only clicked when giving it gas but when I jacked up the car the passenger side felt like it was binding when rotating the axle. I found the outer and inner CV's were both on the small points at 12o'clock when they are supposed to be opposite. Fixed that, new grease, and it seems to rotate good now. Will update when I drive down the road later this week.

It's good that you clocked them but that only makes a small difference. I'd also suggest jacking the rear of the car up under the chassis so that both rear wheels are hanging freely. Then measure the axle angle. 930's should not be more than 25 degrees. I'd run them at 23 degrees. Adjust your limit straps accordingly.

I will definitly do that, thanks for the feedback.. I just am crossing my fingers that it is not the tranny..
