I have a 10 yr old wireless router and I think it's time for a new one.

Problem is, I know NOTHING about them.
Does anyone have a suggestions on what to get?

I have 4 laptops, 1 printer and 4 cellphones that need to have a connection. Oh ya, we also have three different OS's on the laptops..

I can wire 2 of eh laptops if needed but would prefer wireless for everything.

Anyone know what I need?

I'm sure the guy that sold you the printer will know what you need. laughing.gif

,Depending on how old your laptops are, you need an A/B/G or G/N router. Most everything runs on G and N now though, so not all routers will broadcast a and b..
I prefer Netgear, I just bought a dual band wireless at Fry's for 99.00, works in 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz.. If you have a wireless phone in the house this will come in handy.
Here's the one I got..

I run a blueray player with Netflix,3 laptops and a wireless printer with it. Never a dropped signal like my old A/B/G router.

Any of the new routers will work..

Dual band is only needed if you have dual bands in service.. (Not likely)

Pick one with high power, as the distance covered is key..

Don't forget to set up "Encryption" so your system is safe.. (It's hard not to with newer systems)

Enjoy..

With our 2 cell phones and laptops running we would get dropped signals and IP conflicts all the time with my other wireless G router..
Haven't had shit dropped since i installed this one...
I have no effin clue about dual band service but the dual band router sure helps out with all the connections we have.

Dual band is actually for the two frequencies used..

IMHO, it's about power and Perhaps MIMO firmware..

My MIMO Netgear is flawless with everything I throw at it..

I've used every router known to man..

Most work just fine..

Strangely, the new CISCO routers are underpowered.. (Go figure)

Power is the answer.. no matter the question..

I think they're all about the damn same these days. My last 2 Netgears didnt make it a year before the wireless got very flakey wife.gif I'm running a Belkin right now, we'll see how that works out.

Leo LaPorte seems to like D-Link..

(KFI Radio)

I've not had bad results with any thing but Cisco..

Our D-Link died two weeks ago after several years. Went to Best Buy and they had 3 different Linksys series N routers. Of course the medium level was on sale, but out of stock. The lower end model seemed like it didn't have a very good range. The higher end model was $179.99 blink.gif Drove across the street to Costco and they had the same exact higher end model for $129.99. Set up was easy and it's amazing just how much faster our wireless is running now. I'm very happy with it. icon_biggrin.gif

Both Netgears and the one I had before it (Buffalo) were DD-WRT compatible; doesnt help with reliability but it's nice to crank of the power.

Bought a Motorola surfboard modem/wireless router combo to cut down on clutter a couple months ago. Unfortunately it doesnt work with VoIP so we cannot use it. I wouldnt say it is the best out there, but its badass and saves space.

I couldnt bring myself to throw it away after I just paid $120 at BestBuy, so it just sits in the closet.

check out the specs http://www.pcworld.com/shopping/detail/prt...er/pricing.html if youre interested make me an offer and I'll send it to you.
