all you guys remember the problem I had with my R about the no spark thing. Well here goes the story! I found out the problem, just a minor connection, get it fixed, put it back together, give it a few kicks, doesn't want to start, pull the spark plug back out, put my finger on the hole, no compression, yah, my day just got better! Took apart the cylinder and found out my piston is in a few pieces (not to bad only a top end rebuild) and then I found out the pieces of that piston went into the gearing and bottom end. Therefore it will need a complete engine rebuild! Gonna cost me about 700 in parts to do it myself and about 1200 to pay for somebody to do it! Looks like my riding days are over for a long long time!

Pieced shouldn't have gotten into the gearing, just down into the crank. And it shouldn't cost $700 for that. CalAtv at www.calatv.com has the whole crank for an 87-88 for $245, says it can be used on '86 with the spacer plate that costs $40. You can get Seal Kits from www.peakmoto.com for $24.95, includes everything and the seal kits are $32.95. BUT, do you think you need a new crank or just crank bearings? Those are cheap. I bought a whole bearing kit for $110 including the 2 for the shifter. No crank though, they are $20 a piece. So, max you're looking at....$500, and I know you can get a piston for like $80. So, $580 worst case scenario.

Most likely, you'll need the Piston with wrist pin and bearing for about $80, the 2 crank bearings for $40, and then you'll have to get the Rod bearing and have the crank pressed apart and put back together and then $55 in seals. Sheesh, $300. There ya go, bike works.

Oh, and don't forget $40 for a rehone

And 50.00 for Marks advice [Big Grin]

Better yet.... Turn the bike upside down flush out the chunks... Slap a new piston on and "Brap"
There you go. Remember its a HONDA, don't treat it like a yamaha or it will never run right [Wink] [Bandit]

And furthermore.... The chunks got into the gearing??? What they bashed themselves all the way through the wall that seperates the combustion chamber from the Transmission portion of the engine? Man that must of made some hellatious noise. [Disturbed] Andrew where do you live man. I'm sure Mark wouldn't mind taking a look at that thing for you and gettin you up an runnin [Big Grin] Would ya Mark? Come on its for a moderator and all.... ( Thankfully not the Quad Technical forum ) But yea give Mark a call his number is: 858-555-1212 He's a really nice guy won't mind at all [Big Grin]

Hey Tres! LOL Yeah, I started babbling there huh? I was with you on that, no way did metal get down into the gearing unless the crank bearings blew up or there is a hole in the case. Hey, there was a topic on this.....getting the metal out of the bottom end, I can't seem to find it. I know you(Tres) are a fan of using water. I'm more into taking it apart to make sure everything gets out of there. [Big Grin] But I always do things the hard way. [Wink] I would help him out though. Most likely nothing got damaged.
BamBam
AH HA! I found it. In Two Wheel Technical http://www.glamisdunes.com/ubb/ultimatebb....t=000413#000000

I agree with Tres, I have done this a few times... at G even. Worked every time. BTW. I used gasoline to flush the bottom end... pour it all in one spot and it makes a good fire. [Eek!] But I did have the cylinder bored for the new piston each time.

What's up with this Tres, have a bad experence over there. [Confused]
dat dude
That last topic about flushing the bottom end was on my bike. Everything worked out just fine. Be generous and patient with flushing it out both right side up and upside down and all the material should come out. The toughest part is getting those tiny aluminum flakes out..the big stuff comes out pretty easy. Also do your self a favor and get a magnetic drain plug to take care of any residual crap in there.
treshombre
Yea the Mod in Quad Tech is a real a$$. [Disturbed] [Big Grin]
J/K Nah Tom I was messin with Wapa cause he said the pieces went into the gearing....
Me have something against a fellow Honda guy?? No way...Not me. I believe all mods should own Hondas! Even if they do have chunks in the gearing [Big Grin] [Bandit]
treshombre
Hey Dat dude which method did you use to flush?
dat dude
I used diesel fuel followed by a few quarts of oil. Worked out pretty well. Thanks for the advice! [Big Grin]

I couldn't agree with you more about the mod's having HONDA's,It should be mandatory. Then the cycle tech mod would have to get a real bike. [Wink]

I need a job like Chummin's so I can dedicate more time to what really maters. THE BOARD and my forum. [Big Grin]

But the drain plug won't take out any residual Piston flakes. Especially aluminum flakes. Remember, aluminum doesn't stick to magnets and if he does have piston flakes in his gearbox (where the drain plug is) he has a lot more problems then just flushing out the crank.
dat dude
True BamBam, but you have to agree that for 10-12 bucks its cheap piece of mind and gives you an idea of whats going on in there every time he changes the oil. [Bandit] [Bandit] [Razz]

I had some guy look at it from work, found out I got a few gears screwed up too, thats where that metal came from. I got an option to sell my Honda (as it is) for 1500. Then I would take that 1500, work some overtime, get about 3500 to 4000 and buy another Honda or a banshee, haven't decided yet, I gotta call the guy!

Yeah, but see, if you dump the $700 to $1000 into it now, you'll know the thing is in prestine condition and you won't worry about it. Plus, you could do it yourself and learn a lot. If you buy someone else's bike, who's to say there isn't a problem with the gears in that bike?
WaPaWeKkA
thats a problem too, not knowing what you get, but I know this guy welll..hell, I've worked wit him for the past 2 years. I don't think he'd sell me a problem bike. He just told me that he prefers the rock climbinb mountain ATVing then the glamis ATVing.
