So the news said the jet stream is going to carry a plume to southern Ca and it will be here by Fri. As of now its not supposed to be a severe health risk but it said that there may be some "minor" health consequences.

What do you think???

As the World turns Az will get it too. A hugh conributor to USA and world smog has been contributed to the industrial expansion in China. We will get the Radiation hopefully it rains a bit as iit crosses the Pacific to dilute the concentration.

LA smog is worse then that cloud =)

According to the Nuke pros, there is no chance of anything making land here in the us..

Let me ask you guys a question. If the plume does come and it does have radioactive fall out in it. What is the safety measure. Can you remain safe simply by staying in doors and not breathing it, or is it like the "microwave" effect above out heads where one would need to be under ground, basement etc.

Experts are saying that we get more radiation from our microwaves and cell phones daily than the amount of radiation that will make it here from Japan on Friday.
I'm not worried. When they start handing out Iodine tablets, then I'll start worrying blink.gif

Thats what they say to the population to not cause a panic!!! I'm moving as we speak suckers 25biggrinangela.gif ... OK sorry I know its no joking matter... I just hope the experts are right but all the radiation has to go somewhere so if it rains it will put it in the water or crops. either way we'll get a taste of it eventually. Thats just the way it is but I just hope its not now. What can you really do head for the hills? Where

The plume is basically irradiated smoke/dust particles, and water vapor. Stay indoors, and you should avoid being exposed to most of it. There's rain predicted for the weekend, that'll wash most of it out to sea. It's really nothing to be overly concerned about. We got hit by a similar plume after Chernobyl, I don't recall seeing a lot of three-headed babies after that.

FWIW: if you ride hardpack (especially the Mojave), you probably inhale more radioactive/poison dust on one good ride than you'd get from this plume.

I work for a Contract Manufacturer of Dietary Supplements and our phone has been ringing off the hook with companies big and small who want Potassium Iodide and or Sea Kelp tablets manufactured. But only if they can get them completed in two weeks or less. I've talked with a couple of the purchasers and they're not in a rush to get finished product because they want to help as many people as they can. A couple of them flat out said that there's good money to be made off the panic but only if they can get their tabs to the shelves before the hype wears off. Personally, I'm not worried about fallout. I agree with Chummin, Fear Sells.

I think we get more radiation from a X-ray or CT scan than what we will get from Japan. That being said I got some potassium iodide tablets off craigslist you guys want to share? 25biggrinangela.gif

Fear sells, yeah, we all know that. But I don't trust anything the media puts out.

IMO, the nuclear threat to Japan is being down played by them. All you have to do is look at the satelite pictures...they speak a 1000 words. Two containment units have completely exploded. Fuel rods are exposed and they are using helicopters to dump water onto them in an attempt to keep them from melting down. That sounds like a last resort to me. Could you imagine being the helo pilot?!

Now whether it will get here or not, the answer is yes it will. The real questions is how much. And that answer will depend on just how bad things get over there. IMO, there is a threat to So Cal. Maybe minimal at this time, but I also thinks things will get worse over there before they start getting better.

I work for the Government - Department of Defense. I'm hearing that the best protection for everyone and their family is to stay inside their house this weekend. DO NOT try to outrun this cloud coming in from Japan. It's not safe to go outside after Friday morning, until the cloud passes completely on Sunday afternoon.

There.... that oughta keep everyone at home so the desert isn't so crowded this weekend! sraptor.gif

I hear your supposed to wrap aluminum foil around the top of your head and sit in the closet until it passes. I think Stater Bros is having a sale on the stuff <:-)
D.O.N.E.
Not to contribute to the panic

But microwave radiation (electromagnetic radiation) is a different type of radiation from what is coming out of a nuclear power plant (beta & gamma radiation)

Remember from chemistry there are different types of radiation, basically radiant enery. Even light is a form of radiation.

Beta radiation is fairly easy to 'stop' ie a piece of foil will effectively block the radiation from going any further. I'm pretty sure there is enough atoms of whatever between here and japan that I'm not concerned.

Gamma radiation - Nothing really truly stops gamma radiation. I think it is 1 inch of lead will half the amount of gamma radiation. Add another 1 inch, and here's the tricky part, you didn't just stop the other half of the radiation that made it past that initial inch of lead - you only halved it, so now you've got a 1/4 of your initial radiation and so on with each lead sheet only halving the amount of radiation. So the question is how much 'stuff' is there between the exposed rods and us is there, and how many inches of lead does that equate to? And how much radiation is coming out of there?

In the news even the US is only advising our citizens to evacuate 50 miles away - I think Japan is only advising evacuation if you are within 15 or 20 miles, so the US is being much more cautionary. So maybe I'm being non-chalant about it, but eeeh I'm not really concerned when I start adding up all of the above. I'm thinking what if any that makes it over here is probably similar to the amount of radiation we all get naturally from the environment. Now I'm only building that opinion on some rather basic research and chemistry edumacation so I guess the best thing to do is listen to the experts on the news and do your own research.

I'm not worried... I have complete confidence that our exalted and magnificent president and his super qualified cabinet and adminstrators will handle this crisis along with all of the other hard work they are doing in handling the evolving revolutionary events in the middle east and north Africa.

Why worry????

breaking news......Obama just announced his college basketball picks! Glad there are no more pressing issues for him!

I'm not worried.

Washington state will get the worst of it based on the jet stream.

The news and atomic agencies are reporting we will see "trace" amounts of radiated particles. If you're worried, stay inside and run your central air fan...change the filter after this is all over.

Taking potassium iodine blocks iodine based radiation (produced through fission aka nuclear energy) The pills block the thyroid from processing this type of radiation thus helping to reduce thyroid cancer. The pills basically cause hyperthyroidism (which can make you gain weight).

Also...the survival rate of thyroid cancer is in the high 90% range. My sister had it, had her thyroid removed in an out patient procedure and was on her boat 2 days later cruising up and down the East coast. over 5 years now...no issue.

The storm we are going to get this weekend is currently in the pacific northwest and the jet stream is carrying that down to southern california. I don't think the jet stream will carry the plume to the washington area. Hope for rain to dilute any radiactive particles before it arrives in So Cal.

I heard the lifespan for the radiation is only 8 days? there are many people that moved back into the Chenobol (spelling?) area a month or so after and have no ill effects of that meltdown. Now the people that were affect have a high risk are the young and Women that haven't given birth yet.

FYI, I have put far worse thing into my lungs.......

Just something to think about...

This happened during the days of Communist in power...LOTS of media control.

Since the fall, Russia has reported a lot of thyroid cancer cases from people in and around the Chernobyl area.

Let us not forget 3 mile Island that happened here in the states...

Hopefully it does hit so cal and wipes out all the endangered species in the dunes except the duners. Then they have no reason for a closure. I will be out monitoring the radiation levels somewhere between olds and china wall this weekend.

Tell us about 3 Mile Island, as far as I know, nobody has died from 3 Mile Island Accident.

Thryoid Cancer, while not fun, has about a 90% survival rate. I have to believe there was far more radaition in the air during the cold war when th USA and Russia were testing bombs.

I've read (whatever that's good for), that there is an UNinhabital 50 miles radius around Chernobyl, even to this day. And that there won't be anyone living anywhere near it for 24,000 years.

Relax. Everthing around you is some kind of hazard... but most will live to 70 or 80 anyway. Drinking too much water will even kill you... and that is 90% of what you are mde of!

The truth is that your own choices are usually a bigger risk to your life than any environmental threat.
