PRINCETON -- An accomplished big-wave surfer died at Maverick's on Wednesday while surfing waves up to 60 feet.

Sion Milosky, 35, of Kalaheo, Kauai, Hawaii, apparently drowned after enduring a two-wave hold down around 6:30 p.m., according to Maverick's surfer Ken Collins, with whom Milosky was staying in Santa Cruz.

Collins said Nathan Fletcher, an invitee to The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Contest who had traveled to Santa Cruz with Milosky, went looking for Milosky on a Jet Ski shortly after he fell. Collins said Fletcher found Milosky's body at the Half Moon Bay Harbor mouth, about a mile from the break, 20 minutes after the incident.

Milosky was named the North Shore Underground Surfer of the Year last month. He used some of the prize of $25,000 in travel funds to fly to Santa Cruz on Sunday to catch one of the last big swells of the season at Maverick's, near Half Moon Bay.

"Sion was dominating it. He was out there catching so many waves, he was so good," said Collins, also a Jay at Maverick's invitee. "Everybody was like, 'Who is that? What are you doing letting Hawaiians take over your wave?' That's what blows my mind the most is that he was doing all that, and then he drowned."

Milosky is survived by his wife and two young daughters.

Ah man, that sucks. I've been surfing (every chance I get) for 35 years, and I can't even comprehend the shit these big-wave guys do.

Just to put into perspective the forces that these Hellmen are dealing with, a cubic foot of saltwater weighs about 64 lbs. So if you get hit by a 1' thick lip of a 50' wave, that's 3,200 lbs. slamming you down.

I don't even like getting worked by the little stuff I surf, and I usually don't go out in anything bigger than about 6-8'.

Aloha bruddah, RIP.

Born and raised in San Diego. Im 48. Moved to Half Moon Bay 1988 to 1991 and was shown Mavericks in 88 and told myself I will never surf that spot and never did. It was insane and unpredictable. Back in San Diego I have charged Todos Santos alot but even then if it was too big we would tell the boat operator to go around to Rarelys or Thors Hammer. My Family has 2 homes in Oahu, Kaneohe and I know my limits.
If Mavericks would break BIG more often there would be alot more deaths.

RIP - Sion Milosky

Thank you for the video clip of Jay. It brought back some good memories. I was his neighbor on 36th ave in Santa Cruz in the early 90's and surfed with him many times. He was just a young kid at the time and was so talented on a long board. It was just unreal as the kids his age were all short boarders but they all respected him for his talent. He was destined to be a superstar and was taken way too early. RIP - Jay Moriarity.

Hey Hondajims: That is cool and sad at the same time that you knew him. I was in the Swamis Surfing Assn for like 20 years and Santa Cruz Longboard Union put on a great contest every Memorial weekend. We would always cheer on L.J Richards for Senior Division and Joel Tudor for Juniors back then. They are from San Diego and are Cardiff locals.

Oh yeah, those were some good contests. Do you remember a guy named Wingnut ? He was really a big influence on Jay. Great times for sure. I actually learned to surf in Cardiff as my Dad was the Football coach at Torrey Pines. Anyway, sorry to hijack.
