According to a San Diego New Station:
After the July 4th weekend the beaches had over 100 tons of trash left behind by the general public with most of it left ON THE BEACH!
I thought only off-roaders were slobs??

That's always been my response to people who point to our trash problem... I tell them to visit a county park or state beach after a holiday weekend!

I dont mean to be critical. (oh hell who am I kidding? yes I do) but:
If the beaches had 100 tons of trash left behind behind wouldn't it have to be on the beach?

I think he meant "on the beach" as opposed to "in the can".
100 Tons TOTAL, with most of it being "on the beach".
Amazing, and public works was perfectly capable of picking it all up with no problem too!
I guess we should close the beaches down because of this?

Its pathetic !, the trash at the SD beaches was 100 times worse than any day after at glamis !. The only difference is there was a swarm of city workers on monday morning to pick it all up. Of course it is all paid with taxpayer $'s.
Call it a tax or a FEE, wether it is a SD beach or the dunes, it is a necessary evil IMO.

Saw the pictures in the Tribune, I could not believe how much trash there was. It was as if people tried to leave all the trash they could, effen idiots.

I thought it was cool that the "guard shack" at Oceano was giving out trashbags to everyone coming through. The ranger station on Gecko will do the same, if you walk in there and ask.
I've been other places where there is a trash bag dispenser near the fee deposit boxes.
Wonder what it would take to convince the BLM they should do something like that?

That's a good idea Vicki.
I know I always keep a 10 pack of 30 gal bags in my truck.

couple things..
Believe it or not - MOST of the trash is taken to the cans. Every year its the same story - Not enough cans so people just stack it around the cans.. The piles get HUGE. This has been going on since I lived in PB early 90s. Its sick but the birds make it worse.. The EFFIN seagulls pull it apart and scatter it like a bunch of wild dogs.
The effin city is still in denial that they need to bring in the big cans like in Glamis for these weekends and have them set up for easy access as well as have people to empty the cans as they fill.
Mission Bay after the firework show is just horrible. could be easily taken care of with the bigger cans and more of them.

Why would they want to fix the problem when they can squeeze more money out of the taxpayers....

I can't tell you how many times I've handed out trash bags to people who looked like they could use one. And not just at Olds or Comp but maybe a campsite next to us or at the drags.
The Mobleys bring down those collapsible trash cans to the drags and they always get filled up. If it's there, people will use it.
It would be the same at Mission Bay. Oh, it won't get rid of the problem completely... there will always be people who leave their trash for others to pick up... but it would sure help.

Almost all of it on mission bay is bagged. The birds cut in to it all night long and usually partially the next morning.. thats what spreads the trash. People are getting it to the can for the most part - Problem is how to get 500 lbs of trash in to a 40 gallon can..

Mark - what really sucks is - your right.
Last year or the year before - we handed a trash bag to every group at the base of Olds and asked them to quickly walk around picking up trash and then tossing the bag about 30' in front of them. We drove a truck along and had people walk beside the truck collecting up the bags. Had the entire base of olds clean in less then an hour - Handed out almost 100 bags.

People will help when you just walk up and ask. That was the same morning Kennie almost killed some punk for tossing a beer can at him to pick up - A few other duners decided that was not cool and took care of their own. That was a bitchen morning for sure..

Beaches looked like the parking lot after a Raider game.
They say the beaches in the South were the worst. I was laughing. All the filthy scum down there.

We are. The 100 tons of trash were left by the off roaders that visited the beach. The non off roaders didn't litter.
