WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN POWER BETWEEN A 86 TO A 88 OR 89 DID THE MOTOR HAVE ANY SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE OR ARE THEY PRETTY MUCH THE SAME. I AM LOOKING INTO BUYING A NEW BIKE BECAUSE MINE GOT STOLEN OUT OF MY TOYHAULER AND I DO NOT WANT TO GET ONE THAT HAS LESS POWER. IF YOU ALSO ADD A 310 KIT TO EITHER DOES THAT CANCEL THE DIFFERENCE IN THEM ALTOGETHER OR IS THERE STILL A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED BECAUSE I WANT TO GET BACK INTO THE SCENE AND MEET SOME OF BUT DON'T WANT TO GO THERE JUST WITH THE TRUCK AND AN EMPTY TOYHAULER.

The 87-89 have the long rod version, 4mm longer then the 86. The 89 also has a better clutch set-up. 88&89 have an aluminum swingarm. The 86 has adjustable camber on the A arms. Power is slightly better on the 87-89 and I mean slightly. Heres a link to a nice one I saw recently.

thanks sandstorm I have seen some nice ones out there this will help in my desicion

The 86 is faster [Big Grin] I believe they have taller gearing. My 86 will out pull and out run my buddy's 88 and we have the EXACT same mods done to em. Nothing internal done, just the same bolt ons & same sprocket sizes

but do you guys weigh the same because that in some cases makes all the difference in the world
Sandho
Yes, within 3lbs

The frame and swing arms on the 86-87 250r's are longer then the 88-89 by 2".this makes the over all wheel base longer by 4" to 6" on the 86-87 then the 88-89 models. There is were you get the weight difference.

With these change's you sit a little higher and the bikes weight less on the 88-89. The shorter wheel base give's you better turning ability, that's why they made such good race bikes over the 86-87 models

Sorry, the frames aren't longer, they're the same, all years. The differences are when they changed the swingarm (88) to a 1" shorter, they reconfigured the A-arms 1" forward.
All 250R Fourtrax have the same wheelbase.
You can swap engines from any year to any year frame, they're all ready to just bolt in.
If you replace the hardware on the plactic, all plactic from any year will fit any year.
The connecting rod on the 86 model is 5mm shorter and the cylinder does not have a bridged exhust port. Some people think/believe the 86 revs faster because of the shorter rod. Honda changed in 87 to the longer rod and a different style piston to increase durability.I own an 86 and an 87, haven't found any difference in durability of either engine.
All R engines have the same bore/stroke and about the same horsepower in stock trim.
The 86/87 both have camber adjustment on the A-arms, 88/89 don't.
If you want more info on the R, here's a link to a forum dedicated just to it; http://pub20.exboard.com/bhondatrx250r

You can't go wrong with any year R!

Don't the cdi box's from the 88-89 add a little more performance?

Yes it did when I had a grand nat'l kit install in my 86 Allen at CT Racing told me to upgrade to a 88/89 CDI for better performance.

If the 86 250r has a shorter rod by 5mm's then why did my friend need to have a cylinder spacer plate in his 88 250r when he went with a 310 kit using a 86 rod and with my 86 I didn't? Also why is my wheel base 4" longer then his? and why does mine sit so much lower then his. If you look at the front motor mount on a 86/87, at the frame just under it you will see two supports that hold the upper frame to the lower frame but on a 88/89 there is only one and it's 2" shorter there. It looks like I will have to do a little investigating on this.

Honestly, the only time you need a spacer plate is when you use an 87-89 length rod with an 86 style piston. Your friend has an 88 (long rod) and went to a 310. The only pistons available for that size bore are 86 style (which have the wrist pin located 5mm lower in the piston) therefore, the need for the spacer plate. Your 86 already uses the 86 style piston, therefore, no spacer plate is required. If you hold an 86 piston next to an 87-89, you'll see many differences in them.

Now, I'm talking stock chassis only here. The wheelbase is the same on all stock Rs. The 86-87 have a longer swingarm by 1". The 88 model has the shorter swingarm, but the A-arms are reconfigured forward 1". If you line them up side-by-side, they appear different lengths, but if you measure stock chassis from center to center of wheels, they're the same. If you have different wheelbases, you should be checking swingarm lengths and seeing if you have aftermarket A-arms that are configured forward. Most common aftermarket A-arms are +2+1, meaning 2" forward and 1" wider.
Also, if yours sits lower, it is most likely due to shock adjustment/preload settings. My wife's 87 is lower than my 86 until we get on them and then my fat butt shoves mine down lower!

Yes, they changed motor mounts between the 86 and 87, and between the 87 and 88. They are different, but, still the same length frame. Trust me, I've been through this many times and done all the measuring just to convince myself.

Most of the differences between years of the Rs aren't really noticeable to most people, but there are a lot of them and yet so many things remained the same. Like, you can take the motor from an 85 or 86 3-wheel R and it bolts right in to any quad chassis.

Just for fun, check this thread out from another forum. . ..http://pub20.ezboard.com/fhondatrx250rfrm24.showMessage?topicID=12.topic
