I want to take my 400 motor out of my 400EX and replace it with either a 250R (86) or a CR500 motor. Which is better? More reliable? Can the 400EX frame handle the CR500 motor? What is the best year for the CR500 motor?
I am done with the 400 motor. After riding my (86) 250R ATC and a friends (03)Basnhee, I want a 2 Stroke again, but in my 400RX frame with my awesome suspension I added.
Will this be a pretty easy conversion?
Thanks for all the info....

From what I've been told the cr500 motor has a bad vibration problem if mounted in a quad since there is no counter balancer in it. You can swap a 250r motor in place of your 400 and it shouldn't be much of a hassle. A new 88 250r motor goes for 2700 bucks and you get to put it together yourself. Just get in touch with
www.servicehonda.com and they should have all the swap components because they offer a brand new 250r setup in a 400ex quad...

Yes. I will be selling it. I am not sure how much yet. I need to check on what it is worth.
Any ideas?

REMEMBER THE 500 KICK STARTER GOES BACKWARDS TOWARDS THE FENDERS SO YOU HAVE TO PUT A HINGE ON THE PLASTIC TO START IT AND IF YOURE GOING TO GO /W/ THE 250 WHY NOT 2003CR ? MMMMMM POWER VALVE

No idea on the value of the engine...sorry...I was also wondering what else might fit into a '87 Honda 250X TRX Fourtrax frame?

The CR500 motor in fact does vibrate, i had one in an 88 fourtrax frame and it vibrated like heck, and it was rubber mounted at every mount. My choice would to go for the 250r.

Or, get the best of both worlds and have Mac Racing build you a TRX500R motor. Thats a 500 cylinder mated to a 250r fourtrax(counterbalanced)bottom end.

I like the idea of the 500 cylinder on the stock case until I saw the thing put together. I have custom case covers and would hate to see that sloppy weld job on them. I wonder what the engine reliability is on that. I know that with the added power of a 500 it will play hell on the seals, but then again they will be replaced when the motor is built...

So far the reliability has been fine. The only problems has been dialing in the clutch(3rd gear starts with a 200lb + rider) and getting enough fuel to it with the alcohol. As for the welding, this is the owners bike and the first prototype. That was just where they decided to put the bracket for clutch cable. They've cleaned things up considerably since those pics were taken. I'm sure if you were serious about having one built, they would work with you on whatever asthetics you wished.
