Hi guys and gals,
My 99 400ex is in need of more HP. I'm curious what you all think about different setups and such. I like the idea of a hi comp stock bore piston...like 10.8:1 and a hotter cam. Maybe a Web all around or Hotcams stage 2. A 39mmFCR carb may make an appearance also.
I've heard good things about Alan Fox in Alpine too as far as the boring end goes if I decide to go that route.
Gimme some input fella's

Allen Fox(619-445-1415) does great work, he hooked my bike up this summer

That be the way to go buddy. The 400EX will gain minimal power with the bolt-on's. Instead of the 10.8, I'd personally go with the 11.1 IMO. I have some question's about the cat in Alpine, does he do port work? How about turn around time? Does he ask an arm and a leg? Thanks fellas.

5150 HARVEE,
I hear ya on the compression aspect, but 11.1:1 is the highest you would want to go running pump gas. You can run a 11.1:1 on 93-94 octane, but that doesn't exist down here in Cali. 91 is the best your gonna get here. I don't want to even run any sort of mix of race and pump gas. I figured it out one time that if I took 1 gal. of race fuel (110 octane) and mixed with 4 gals. of 91, I could make 95 octane, which I believe would be optimum for for that set-up. All sounds well and good, but what if I run out, I don't want to run to Brawley or Yuma for a couple gals. of race fuel.
So, that's my thinking for the 10.8:1 compression, run a tad lower than what I can get away with, and be on the safe side not worrying about detonation and all.
just my views...

The only thing faster is usually the arrival of problems.
As soon as you get into the piston and cylinder, you throw reliability out the window.
Seized pistons, overheating ect,, it all quickly comes with the change with aftermarket piston sleeve parts.
Puttin' around the campsites chatin' with other duners usually brings a few points to a quad with a toasted motor.
"Yep, we just put in a piston(s) and sleeve(s) and it ran great for a mile or two".
