I have a '87 Honda 250x TRX Fourtrax.....I'm switch'n from a twist throttle back to a thumb throttle.
Is there any way to short'n the throttle cable without have'n to install an entire new cable? I tried the throttle adjustment screw, but still need to short'n it more.

I did the same thing a few years ago on my 250 quadracer, and used the same cable, the end was alittle different on the cable that hooks to the throttle but it works fine. The lenght of the cable really shouldn't make a difference all you are doing is pulling the inside wire 3/4" either way. Is the cable snagged somewhere?

I hooked eveything together.....the old cable with the new thumb throttle.....but there seems to be a ton of play and the spring in the throttle does not "spring back" when the throttle is released. I played with the throttle adjustment screw, but there still seems to be to much cable....it's weird!

I assume the connection inside the carb slider where the cable hooks to is okay? i also assume the cable wire is not broken inside the outer sleeve. Thats the only two things that i could think of.

When I bought my wife's R it had a twist throttle on the stock carb. I got a thumb throttle housing/lever and installed it. The twist cable was about 2" too long no matter what I did. I eneded up buying a new stock cable from Honda (about $40! cause they come with a new top for the carb).
I've seen people shorten them by using a small bushing that will fit in the housing and then drilling it and inserting a very small screw. Lota work.
Well.....I bought a new throttle cable for the thumb throttle....I think it's the only answer after hours of try'n to short'n the existing twist throttle one. Oh well.
Thanks for all the info!
