It seems that the DMV is all messed up. My Brother in law bought a new Blaster a while back and it was red. When he paid his renewal, he got a green. This is not the first incident of this I have heard. Many have said the same thing. The fine is like a hundred bucks, So I have been told.... Anyone else?

As with anything DMV, what you think you know, may not be their reality. But, AFIK, the DMV supposedly had things screwed up, so anything 2002 and older, even if originally issued a red sticker, will reissue it as a green sticker. 2003 and newer get a red sticker if the 8th digit in the vin is either a C or a 3. This apparently doesn't matter if the bike is brought in from out of state either..so those who make the mistake of moving to california are going to get a bad surprise when they go to register their toys..
I thought I read somewhere in one of the various forums that they are trying to pass a law where the fine for riding red out of season would be like $274 or some obscenely ignorant figure. Cause we ALL know those off road vehicles are what cause all the smog in the L.A. basin area...

I have a simple solution...I don't buy it if it's red stickered. If the manufacturers won't put out a decent product that I can ride year round, I'll just buy an older used one that doesn't help their bottom line. I don't use the bikes at 100% capability anyway. If it were me, I'd look for a clean 2002 or earlier blaster, and not worry about the enviro restrictions....

O.k this is how it is suposed to work only 2 Stroke bikes( quads, bikes) can have a red sticker. All 4 Stroke bikes get green stickers. the only problem is when you send your regestration in on it it dose not specify what type of motor is on your bike so the wounderfull goverment employee just gives your new A.T.V any sticker they want. It is your responsability to make sure your regersteration is correct. (I.................e the riget sticker is on the right type of bike) I have seen rangers (USDF, BLM ) give ticket's for improper regestration. But I have only seen them ticket 2 stroke bikes w/green stickers!!! Hope this helps.
P.S. A new blaster should have a GREEN sticker!!!

Um all 2-strokes are red stickers i believe, only the older 2 stroke have green stickers, i dont remember what year but if i bike is made before this 1 year it is a green sticker and after that year it is a red sticker, thats what i have been told and heard

all this red sticker BS started in or around 97'. my bike (2002 banshee) had a red stickers for the first season with me and it now sits in there with a green sticker. now currently i dont know what the law is but its not just 2 strokes that can get a red sticker anymore. the "high performance" 4 strokes cang et them. but like drnh3 said its hard to determine what bike is what. so how do you determine "high performance" and non?
my bros crf450r ditrbike is red stickered. but i think youd be safe for now if you go with a 02' or later.
i might know someone sellin a blaster. all stock and a real good deal. very low hours. and its like an 02' or something. if you want ill check.

they did have 4 strokes there that stated red only. the sales rep said dmv screwed up in 02 and sent out green, if u got 1 you fall under the grandfather clause. 02 and older are green, used to be 97. so what im lookin to here is how a red affects u quad guys??? and YAMIBOY that would be cool but with the divorce and all i will be making payments

if the young man lives through the sumer

im not sure what you mean by this questions....either its too hot for me or i just dont understand it. i dont think it affects us any different than a dirtbike or anything else like it. i guess it just means we can ride during the summer months or something like that. so the bikes are "outlawed" for something like 6 months out of the year. unless on private land. so basically they can bust your kid if he/she is on a summer night ride and they want to be d!#ks.
hopefully that answered your question. and i just found out that the blaster was sold. it was going really cheap something like $2500 for an 02' w/ less than 10 hours on it.
We have a 2004 blaster that our son rides. We haven't been effed with yet. However our friend got a ticket in johnson valley for riding quads with red stickers last month. If you are concerned buy an 02 maybe it will already have everything you want.Good Luck!

There are plenty of quads to choose from that are 4 strokes that will give close to the same performance with half the maintenance and you never have to remember which gas can has the "mixed" fuel in it. I agree with beachhead. He hit the nail on the "head". If we don't buy them, maybe the mfrs. will step up to the fight and get the leg. changed. Yamaha should be in this fight big time and probably would be if their best selling quad: the YFZ 350 (aka Banshee 2 stroke) wasn't selling well here. I just bought one and had to go to 4 dealers to find one in the color I wanted. Let's get them to pony up with some of those profits to help fight this.
A whole holiday weekend at Glamis puts out less smog than 1 semi truck going cross country. Our beloved government is looking in the wrong place for fixes and we are letting them!
Out forefathers started a riot about a little tax on some tea and look what we put up with now? Where are our rights and when are we going to stand up for them. Right to bear arms, GONE. Right to free speach, ALMOST GONE. Right to pursue life and liberty, ALMOST GONE. etc etc.

DMV is truly messed up. When i went to get my 69Sachs 125 dirtbike registered, they gave me motorcycle license plates. Got it cleared up pretty easy and now its just greensticker. Our 02blaster is a green if that helps out any.

I suggest you at least take a look at bigger bikes, I spent over $10k buying quads that only lasted a year with my kids. IMHO, a 400 is the minimum for the dunes.

the original law started in 98 with bikes not passing epa regulations. red stickers were issued for 98 and newer bikes that did not pass. this law went into effect without giving manufacturers enough time to comply.
in turn, the dmv changed the law to 2002 and older bikes are all green stickers. bikes newer than 2002 not passing epa are red sticker. all this info is on the dmv site. just look up registration
www.dmv.ca.gov
anyway, my bike was a 2000 when 98 and newers were getting red stickers. and no just because it is 2 or 4 stroke does not gaurantee teh color of sticker you get. passing epa regulations does.
hope that clears it up, so read up people, dont confuse people with rumors.
